A few shots of Bayadere, a waiting its final performance at the Met. Now onto Othello, The Dream, and Symphonie Concertante.
Julie Kent as Tatiana and Issac Staapas as Bottom, during a full run of The Dream. This is where Bottom falls asleep with Tatiana, after she wakes up and falls in love with him….

Saw the final Bayadere last night. The corps was stunning. After the famous “Shades” scene, the audience went nuts. If the conductor hadn’t resumed the music the applause would have gone on for God knows how long… (and those poor gals would be in 4th arabesque tendu with their arms pointing forever…
Everyone looked great. Irina really IS Gamzatti…………….. wow. She’s amazing.
Merde on The Dream!

Thanks for the pictures! I like Isaac now after seeing him at Guggenheim a couple of months ago…
I’m so disappointed there are only four Othello’s; after seeing you at Guggenheim, I’d really wanted to see you at the Met but unless I’m able to take off work early tomorrow (unlikely since I’m leaving on a trip the following day) I’m gonna miss you. Why so few performances of this one

Just came from Othello… Stella was great as were the whole cast… soloists and corps. But the choreography is often not inspiring. Julie Kent and Marcello were very strong, Sasha was OK.. but he was miscast as Iago… too small and mousy looking. The audience was not thrilled at the production as they (we) were at Bayadere… but that was Pepita and Makahova… to me the difference is obvious… choreography is a very difficult and illusive craft.
ABT does great sets.
The MetOpera now sells sushi at intermission!
The weather was nice…

SanderO I could not agree with you more. I don’t ever think I’ve ever felt so passionately negative about a ballet in my life. I felt so horrible after I walked out of that opera house. Disappointment is not a strong enough word. SR’s being miscast is an understatement (although I disagree on the reasons why) . I think David needs to play Iago not Othello — keep Marcelo as Othello and let David work with him — I know, two big guys lifting each other doesn’t work; I just really think David has the emotional complexity and the artistic sophistication to play such a complex character, so reduced to pure evil last night. Lar Lubovitch gave me nightmares — all last night I kept waking up in a cold sweat!!! I’m still so upset by it, and yet how much do I want so desperately to see it again!!! … I’m so angry that I can’t b/c I’m leaving town!!! Good luck today, David; I’m heartbroken that I can’t be there…

Oh and also, SanderO I do have to disagree with you on the crowd. I was in front orchestra (right near that blaring music — I’m still deaf…) and people gave a screamingly standing ovation — people went nuts over those dancers! I’ve never seen a standing ovation like that unless someone’s retiring. But, having said that, the Met must have been half full last night. I know it was a Tuesday but still…
I think the first two acts need re-working and I think someone else needs to play Iago, but Marcelo was brilliant and worked very well with Julie (much better than with Alessandra last week — they’re both great dancers, albeit in different ways, and were just not on the same page last week). As upset as the ballet made me, it upset me more that the Met was half full. Everyone should go see this ballet, even if it brings out all kinds of weird feelings in you afterward. Just please refrain from shouting lewd things at the female dancers during curtain call… that may have actually been what upset me most…

I love good sets.
Also…it’s Titania! Dream, not Onegin

Oh, and you liked the sets! I didn’t
That broken mirror-backed throne — please! And all those mirrors — they were freaking me out a bit from the second row… maybe this is just NOT a ballet you sit up close for

You made me think, SanderO, that maybe Sascha was reacting against that kind of view of himself and was trying extra hard to be a bad guy… hmmm. I’ve been accused by Philip of being sadistic since I want David to do everything and he is already overworked … maybe I was too harsh on Sascha; I’ll have to give him another chance
It’s 2:00 pm on my clock at work — David is onstage right now getting ready for his opening solo, and I am not in the audience
