After a debilitating seven months dealing with Epstein Barr Virus, I decided that I needed to have a little time out of the city. While most of my friends in the company were dancing up a storm in Berkeley, I decided to journey out to the West Coast as well. One of my best friends, Nick, goes to Seattle University so I took the arduous journey across the US to spend a few days with him.
It seems that traveling across the country takes almost as long as getting to Europe. Between changing planes, eating disgusting travel day food and squeezing myself into a cramped airplane seat at the back of the cabin, I was more than ready to stretch out and explore Seattle.
Nick and his friends welcomed me with open arms and we had a blast exploring all of the incredible independent coffee shops (something NYC is sorely lacking) and doing some low key Seattle adventures. I was hoping to be able to post about seeing PNB, as I was planning on seeing their Friday performance, but I didn’t think I could handle seeing dance while I was in Seattle. After seven months of not being able to dance, it’s just becoming too hard to watch something I’m sidelined from. Instead, I’d like to share some pictures I took at the amazing new Seattle Public Library. It was a feast for the eyes, and I was able to capture a little bit of it with my camera.

(A view of the honeycomb feast from outside.)

(It’s very “Astro Crag” from GUTS.)

(Nick surveys the lobby.)

(The neon escalator to book heaven.)

(A view out the honeycomb makes it clear how boring the rest of the buildings are.)

(Even the air vents were intriguing.)

(Endless books.)

(I want to scale this wall.)

(Mental institution meets honeycomb-chic.)

(I’d love to dance against a backdrop like this.)

(Playing stalker up the escalator. She was very nice though when she noticed I was taking pictures. I just couldn’t resist. BLOG IT!)

Terrific photos! That place looks very interesting. Who was the architect?

Glad that people are enjoying the photos. The architect’s name is Rem Koolhaas. You can find more information here http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Seattle_Public_Library.html

Awesome pictures!
And I totally second what Gwenny says about libraries.
I was about to say it reminds me a little bit of a building I know in Utrecht, the Netherlands, only to read here in your reply to one SanderO’s comment that it’s also from Rem Koolhaas… Who also designed “the Lucent” of Netherlands Dance Theatre!
Small world…

Hey Matthew, it would of been nice if you had come to PNB so we could meet. But I deeply understand that sometimes you just can do it anymore. Being away from ballet and having to watch other people dance all the time it’s really not a pleasant feeling.
I am glad you enjoyed the library, it is an incredible building. I did an entire photo shoot at the library for Dance Spirit Magazine. It was a great time being alone in the library at 6am!!
Take care!
