…This was a one-day only showing on March 26th. Maybe if you ask Brian nicely, he will do this again for his next work!…
Why did I decide to do Paper Magic? My honest answer is that I want to date Natalie Portman. It’s true.
The real reason why I want to do an online showing is because I want to get my work out to the general public after it is complete as soon as possible. I am always thinking about different performance ideas with a huge back catalogue of movement that I have created solely for the purpose of being able to retain the choreography. The Artist Group San Francisco (TAG SF) was created for this reason.
We want to be able to produce and create our own works. Seasoned mature artists, along with younger dancers whom bring a different dynamic mixed with visual artist’s, filmmakers, musicians and other artists of different backgrounds all working together to make the highest quality work possible. Thus far we have been able to do so with no to very little money. We are self-producing all of our own works because we genuinely want to create and collaborate with different artists whom share the same interests.
If I were to wait for grants and commissions to get works produced we would have very little to show. You have to do work to get work, if you don’t get work how do you do work? So it ends up being a catch 22. The talent, imagination, creativity is all there, we have things to say and we do. The works that we make are all things that we would be interested in watching ourselves.
Paper Magic was created as a companion piece. It is two parts of a much larger whole. I made a conscious decision to not use any multi-media this time around so that we can use other inventive ways to set up tone and atmosphere for the works. Paper Magic is simple yet effective.
I had a great time making this and I hope that you all enjoy!
Peace,
B.Gibbs

Great work Brian!
I see your work shaping and shifting. You have a real nack for bringing out the best in the dancers you work with. Martin is so fluid, and Kendall and Damir compliment each other in feminine and masculine energy. Thats how I see it. Really beautiful stuff with the lightiing and newspaper clippings. Urban art farm is the perfect setting. Keep it coming, we are all waiting for the full length ballet/silent film!

someone once told me i wasn’t a choreographer. now, i know why! only some are born with a true talent to make dance! martyn garside killed it - and damir and kendall better work. who did the set construction? very beautiful work, brian. can’t wait to see the full length on the stage!!!
