Even though I knew the run time going into the movie, I still felt like it was too long. There could have been some more editing done. Truly I also would have enjoyed if some more depth had been added to the film in the form of interviews, or maybe even more history. Apparently it is the director’s style not to have those things which is why the final product is so. I did like that they would show the artistic director dealing with issues that you might not think about at all if you were not a dancer (ie: the girl with too many parts).
Overall I enjoyed it, will probably buy it, but it’s not one that I’ll sit down and watch very often. Personally I’d prefer to watch the film on Ballets Russes over La Danse.
who knew Tallchief had a big butt? I really enjoyed the comments from the directors/instructors/rehearsals, felt like the director *really* had access to the inner scenes of a ballet company. I wish they featured more of the etoiles (esp the females), with more classical pieces.
LOVED watching the “Paquita” stage rehearsals. Some of the rehearsals with the men doing classical solo combinations: gorgeous. Wish they showed dancers taking class more. The comments were hilarious.
I think this: “Tout près des étoiles: Les danseurs de l’Opéra de Paris” (2001) is a better Paris Opera Ballet documentary. Shows class, shows the school; has the in depth interviews that are so much more satisfying in a way.

Saw La Danse while I was in Paris! It was in French so I didn’t quite get everything, but I enjoyed seeing the rehearsals and performances!

I’d love to watch it, but here in London it isn’t showing anywhere : (
