KRISTIN SLOAN grew up in Massachusetts, eventually moving to New York at the age of 14 to attend the School of American Ballet. In the fall of 1998, Ms. Sloan began her professional career in the dance world as an apprentice with the New York City Ballet. The following spring, Ms. Sloan was made a full member of the corps de ballet, and went on to dance featured roles in ballets such as George Balanchine’s Divertimento no. 15 (first variation), Walpurgisnacht Ballet, and Stars and Stripes (first regiment), Peter Martins’ The Sleeping Beauty (ruby), Swan Lake (pas de trois, princesses), and Songs of the Auvergne, Jerome Robbins’ Mother Goose (beauty), and Christopher d’Amboise’s Triptych, created for the 2000 Diamond Project. She was also the recipient of a Princess Grace Dance Honorarium in 2000 and appeared in a brief speaking role in the Columbia Pictures’ feature film CenterStage.
While recuperating from injuries, Ms. Sloan began to further explore her interest in the intersection of art and technology. In 2005 she launched the website TheWinger.com, currently home to over 30 dancers, choreographers, teachers, and experts who write about their life and experiences as a part of the dance world. Ms. Sloan’s work on The Winger has lead to speaking engagements, writing assignments and a national television commercial for Apple Inc.’s iPhone, in which she speaks about the site. She is frequently cited in articles on dance and technology, and was interviewed for Allen P. Adamson’s recent book “Brand Digital”.
In the winter of 2006, while still a dancer with NYCB, Ms. Sloan was invited to create a series of videos documenting the creation of Peter Martins’ new Romeo + Juliet. The original 9-part series was shown on NYCB’s promotional mini-site TragicLoveNYC.com. She created a 10th overview episode for the website CoolHunting.com which also appeared in Apple stores across the country as a featured/pre-loaded podcast on iTunes.
In November of 2007, Ms. Sloan retired from dancing at NYCB to take on the role of Director, New Media - the start of a new department for the Company. She is now working to create new and sustainable ways for the company to communicate digitally, promoting and leveraging their unique assets to expand the reach, depth, quality and accessibility of the company outside of the theater. She develops creative solutions that bring together disparate needs and areas of the company, while also designing a production framework that provides cost savings and the ability to scale as new opportunities arise in the digital space.
