Works & Process at Guggenheim Museum

I went to see Fred Sherry Plays Zorn on Monday night. It was such a great evening.

World premiere of “777″( three cellists) Discussion lead by Charles Wuorinen( composer) with Fred Sherry and John Zorn, “Amour fou(1999)” piano, violin and cello, another discussion, solo cello work title “Untitled ( for Joseph Cornell)( 1999)” and again “777″.

“777″ started very disharmony sound, but when you listened it , it was actually harmonied together. It was a long tme ago that I used to listened to one CD which had John Zorn’s work, then long time I did not hear his music. But this performance, he gave me so many different sides of music. every work sounded different from each other. It was just amazing.

“Untitled ( for Joseph Cornell)” has a very interesting story that Zorn, in his childhood, lived in Queens where Cornell lived few doors down from his place. Knowing him as a person, eating icecream at the deli, strange man on the corner… all other aspects…and of course his art work inspire Zorn to make this solo.

I love this “works & process” at Guggenheim. You get to know the artist!and we came out after this performance, they were putting new exhibition. Interesting to see how they were putting this cars up in the air…

BAM 2008 Spring Season

Has now started.

Written in 1960, Samuel Beckett’s “Happy Days” was just wonderful to open the season.
Fabulous Fiona Shaw displayed a woman burried in the earth in two different times. She does not have much ‘body language’ since she is in the earth, up to the waist and then up to the head… was just incredible to see the changes. It is fully convincing.

I saw Shaw in “Media” a few years ago at the same theater. I can’t forget how she performed, and now I dance Media in MGDC, it was a great to see another production of the same story. Even though it was not dance, it gave me a lot to think about.

This play actually has 2 actors, but almost 95% is Shaw’s monologue.

1 and 1/2 hours!

I just loved it.

Gifts for Dancers…

As a holiday gift to all of you, (I apologize for it’s lateness)…

A sampling of Winger contributors gave our thoughts on what we (or other people involved in dance) might be excited about for the holidays.

We’ve suggested some things that are useful, inspiring, or just plain cool.

Popular among many contributors were spa treatments (and related goodies), magazine subscriptions, books, music, performance tickets, and the iPhone.

Enjoy!

Look before you leap: an advice guide for choreographers” by Ann Whitley

The description on the back says:

“This is not a book about how to choreograph. It is a practical guide to the negotation, preparation, organization and continuing care of choreographic work. It is intended as a useful source of reference for choreographers, assistant choreographers, dance teachers, managers, administrators, amateurs, movements specialists, composers, designers, technicians and all those who collaborate with choreographers.”

Also,

Touchstone by Laurie R. King
This book doesn’t come out till Boxing Day, so I guess it doesn’t technically qualify for holiday gift giving status (though I suppose you can always give New Year’s presents… why not?), but Laurie R. King is one of my favorite mystery writers. Her stories are always deliciously smart and satisfyingly precise.

Chocolate
One of those gifts that can very rarely go wrong (though my sister has a friend who likes neither chocolate nor peanut butter! Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups must be like a bad nightmare to him). My recent obsessions are Green and Black’s dark chocolate (really flavorful, but not too bitter) and Theo Chocolate’s “Bread and Chocolate” bar, which is dark chocolate pocked with the tiniest crumbs of salty baugette. This sounds like a really bizarre and unpleasant combination, but it’s addictive and delicious. Plus, the wrapper is a cheerful yellow and has adorable, cartoonish cats on it. - MEGAN

The top on my list are gift certificates for 90 minute massages at the Equinox Spa and 60 minute session gift cards for True Pilates and True Pilates East - anything that soothes aching 35 year old muscles!
Truth be told, I am also a sucker for anything from Hermes in the Hermes orange along with any little Louis Vuitton accessory like the I-Pod case. I guess that’s my two or four cents. - IAN

St Denis’s Exotic beauty

This “Prelude and Revolt” included “Serenata Morisca” by Ted Shawn, “Lamentation” by Marhta Graham(in these pictures,Once again Katherine Crockett)

Cleveland, OH

Graham Company was in Cleveland, OH.

Out side of the hotel that I saw was…

Just a few days after Halloween. Not even Thanksgiving….

What is happening in America? The end of October, you see the Christmas Tree, Snow man, at the Arts & Crafts Store, they are already playing christmas songs…

at the performance, Halim El-Dabh who composed Martha’s “Clytemnestra” came to see us. He worked with Martha to compose this great ballet. MGDC is putting this ballet back together next year. It will be so nice to have live music and singers…

Here Halim, Janet ( Artistic Director) and dancers.

PS:Sorry I did not have those pictures in bigger form.

from the stage right…

This is once again the same shot that I took from “Appalachian Spring” photo call run.

This is Jessie Ksanznak, one of our stage manager on this fall. She is wataching “Appalachian Spring” from the stage right.

She is running her cues.

This is a REAL back stage. Cross over is a bit like a old club.

Here Denise Vale, who used to dance in the company and now rehearsal director is giving notes after the run. on the left Jackie Bulnes , on the right Jacquelien Elder with Maurizio Nardi on the rock.

The other moment after the run, David Zurak is feeling the space, and Maurizio and the Followers( Atsuko, Jacqueline and Masha on site) getting notes.

and finally, Jessie could have a stage!!!

From the side

I don’t even remember where we were.

“El Penitente” sets by Isamu Noguchi. This is one of my favorite pieces to dance. I started to dance “El Penitente” when I was in the Ensemble. This is one of the pieces that I worked on with Yuriko and Martha, and it was a hard but wonderful experience.

(Here David Zurak as Christ figure changing behind the sail. and death cart on the floor)

(Tadej Brdnik is Penitent)

This is the “Applachian Spring” set viewed from down stage right. Another beautiful Isamu Noguchi set!!!

From the left, David Zurak as Husband Man, Maurizio Nardi as Preature, Four Followers are Jacqueline Elder, Atsuko Tonohata, Jackie Bulnes and Mariya Dashkina Maddux, Katherine Crocket as Pionerring Woman in the last prayer during Bride’s solo.

more to come…

Orange County———-Fall for Dance in California

This is the first year that NY City Center’s project “Fall for Dance” is expanded to California.

MGDC was there.

This is Orange County Performing Art Center. On the right is the theater we performed. on the left is the concert hall and center piece is RIchard Sirra’s ( I know this spelling is not right) “Conecter”.

after the inside performance, there is a airial work on the wall of the OCPAC.

In and out

After the Joyce Theater season in September, we started this “in and out” tour, which included Seattle, Orange country (Fall for Dance in CA), Dover, Fredrick… and I don’t remember where we went anymore.

These are some pictures from the tour.

This is in Fredrick, MD. He has a program brochure with my picture on it… it looks a bit scary…

Front of the theater in Frederick

and I am getting steamed…

and more to come.

MGDC on Tour

We had a great NY season at the Joyce Theater and soon after, we left for tour. This tour is 8 weeks altogether, but in and out from NY.
The first part of the tour, took us to Seattle(WA), Dover(DE),Newark(DE) and now we are in Frederick(MD). It is interesting to see different theater set-ups.

This is Judy who is our Lighting Supervisor on this tour. Usually she gets a desk on top of the seats but in Dover, a music stand was what she got. It is funny to see her this way.

And this is the “Errand into the Maze” stage rehearsal before the show. On the left side we called this “Bone” or “Pelvis”, in the air is what we call “Moon” . These are also Isamu Noguchi’s design.

Today is a day off in Frederick so I will visit downtown and walk around. Hope I remember to take some photos… I always forget…
