Bushnell Stage

Backstage at the Bushnell Theater in Hartford, Connecticut.

This was one of the hardest performances of my life. After a 3 1/2-year run of injuries, I had finally been able to train and take ballet classes consistently. While taking classes at the School of American Ballet to get back in shape, my former co-worker Nilas Martins asked if I would be interested in dancing Allegro Brillante and Concerto Barocco for a gig he was doing in Connecticut. I jumped at the opportunity since I hadn’t danced in so long and felt ready to take the plunge.

I had performed Allegro Brillante with NYCB before, but I had never even learned Concerto Barocco. It’s interesting how after a long hiatus, not only do you get out of shape physically, but also mentally. When you’re working consistently your brain can pick-up, process and remember choreography like a machine. But after a long break, it’s not quite as easy.

The actual performance was a bit rocky . . . but everyone has to start somewhere. I’m so greatful to Nilas for giving me the opportunity to dance at that level again, and to all the dancers for being so welcoming. It was very telling that after everything I had been through in getting over my injuries, and feeling so uneasy and unsure about myself, I still had fun performing. My parents Gary and Gail, as well as Doug and my best friend Megha all came out to support me, which was amazing.
