This was one of my first shots using my new Fuji Finepix that Doug got me for Valentine’s Day. It came cleverly concealed in a jell-o pudding container.

“ladies of the ballet” room 18

This is my dressing room on the fourth floor of the New York State Theater, also known as my second home. We’re here from 10am to 11pm on some days. It’s not super swanky, but it gets the job done.

How about getting a “Trading Spaces”-type show in here to help us out? Definitely more exciting than a new layer of contact paper.

Me and my boyfriend Doug at the gala dinner table…
We feasted on steak, wine, and conversation with some of my co-workers, all dudded up.
I was a part of Christopher Wheeldon’s new ballet “An American in Paris”, based on the 50’s movie with Gene Kelly. My hair had been plastered into a classic up-do, so I kept it up for the party, and donned my grandmothers 50’s style lime green dress to match.

Angel, master of the New York City Ballet shoe room…
He makes sure we all have enough pointe shoes and slippers to get through the season, and then makes sure they make it into the giant crates that go with the company on tour. This often involves hunting dancers down to get us to select or “bag” the shoes we want to take - no easy task.

All of our pointe shoes are hand-made and specifically designed for each dancer. The shoes can take from 3 to 6 months to arrive from the Freed factory in London. There are different “makers” and each maker has his own special characteristics. I have maker “T” . . . I like to refer to him as “Mr. T”, although I suspect that an apprentice has been making some of my shoes lately, due to their inconsistency.

Behind Angel is Margherite, one of the almighty stage managers who has also amazingly given birth to three children while still working our odd theater hours.
