my job is so fun

This morning, the great Mikhail Baryshnikov was nice enough to let me take his picture for thewinger. He often takes our company classes, and likes to stand at my usual “spot” at the barre, but I guess it was probably his spot first, so I am of course honored to scoot over.
He has recently built what I think is a truly wonderful thing, the Baryshnikov Arts Center. The idea behind it is to provide the space and opportunity for artistic collaboration and experimentation that crosses disciplines. The soul of the idea reminds me a lot of the LVHRD Foundation and the Semi-Permanent design conference which Doug and his company, thehappycorp, run (Semi-Permanent was originally started by Andrew Johnstone, founder of Design is Kinky, and was brought to the US with the help and Doug and thehappycorp).
The artistic panel for the BAC is full of artistic superstars like Pedro Almodovar and Annie Leibovitz. I have yet to visit the BAC, but I intend on going to the Movado Hour on April 11th and checking it out.

SAB virtual tours

Picture 5

I was just looking at the School of American Ballet’s website and found these really cool virtual tours! This is where I, and so many dancers, spent my first two years in New York when I came at 14. You can check out the studios, the dormitory, and some of the Lincoln Center area. I bet my family wishes this had been available back then!

José Mateo’s Ballet Theatre of Boston is celebrating their 20th anniversary of new works with performances at their beautiful and inspiring performance and studio space in Harvard Square from now through April 29th and again in October.
José is an extremely gifted choreographer and director with a unique aesthetic and vision for his company. I trained with him at Ballet Theatre of Boston’s school (previously located on Mass Ave. in Boston), and his teaching and guidance was what made me strong enough and confident enough to gain acceptance to the School of American Ballet and come to New York.
Look for an article on the company in the next issue of Dance Magazine, with photographs by Gary Sloan.

bloggers unite!

Andrew Krucoff (of gawker.com fame) and me, in Kyle Froman’s elevator, looking really excited to have our picture taken in an elevator. We’re nice people, really.
The other night Dougie and I took Andrew and his lady friend Rina to a “ballerina party”, and in turn, he brought us to a “blogger party”. The former was Kurt and Kyle Froman’s well-attended 30th birthday bash at Kyle and his husband Andrew Kurtzman’s beautiful loft. The latter was an after-party full of celebrity bloggers like Jessica Coen, Gawker media’s head honcho Nick Denton, and of course Andrew and me.

the almighty foam roller

A week of not dancing (due to my recent mouth trauma), really makes a difference.
Now that I’ve jumped back into class and rehearsals this week, my body’s feeling a little tight.
That’s when mister foam roller comes in super handy. It’s basically used to roll out your muscles, particularly in the legs and back, and is extra helpful when it comes to working out the iliotibial band (also known as the I.T. band) which is notoriously problematic for dancers and hard to release.

This illustration shows the location of the IT band, as well as another killer, the tensor fascia latae.
