The Nutcracker season has officially ended.

Sad for me, because it means I no longer get to play on stage until my injury is fully healed. Hopfully it won’t be too much longer.

But it’s good for all the other dancers, who are anxiously awaiting putting Nutcracker behind them so that they can focus all their energies towards Peter Martins’ Sleeping Beauty which will begin its two-week run on Tuesday.

Here’s Faye, my buddy and dressing room neighbor. This photo was taken before the third to last Nutcracker performance, when delerium had set in, and our dressing room began doing Borat impressions… for a good 15 minutes.

Here’s one of my favorite moments of my Nutcracker performing experience this year… passing the little mice awaiting their time on stage, on my way to the elevator.

One time, all the little mice kids where hanging around the elevator, and as the Mouse King steps out of the elevator, one of the them (in a very deep voice for a little girl), says “Hey Duuuuuude.”

My parents dress, looking a bit sad, ready for it’s last outing of the year.

Nora says, “Just look at all these pit pads!”

As the Nuts is happening, our friends in the green room work diligently on preparing the costumes for Sleeping Beauty.
All of the costumes get “pit pads” to soak up the unsitely sweat marks that inevitably appear over the course of a performance. Not super glamourous, but they serve an important purpose.

On the prettier side of things…here’s the Lilac Fairy tutu getting a few repairs.

And finally, the Green Room First Aid Kit/Tool Box.

Happy Holidays

Elevator #6… take me to the stage!

I thought I’d try to do a little montage of my backstage experience during NYCB’s Nutcracker. If you didn’t catch it already, I’m just a “party parent” this year, do to my disabled status. The injury doesn’t seem to effect this role too much, although I feel kind of bad that I can’t kneel down to help the girls up when they fall at one point, or kneel down to fix the girls skirts before the dolls dance. I feel like the one parent that doesn’t help out, but hopefully I’m the only one that notices!
Passing through the hallway, on my way to the Greenroom (where the ladies get into their costumes) I pass the Arabian and Lead Spanish costumes, followed by a row of Sugarplum Fairy tutus. The principal costumes in the Nutcracker have multiple copies, to fit all sorts of body types.

The ladies in the Greenroom pose for a photos in front of the “Christmas Tree”. They work so hard to help keep the costumes ready for action, and to strap us into them when it’s time for the show.

The flowers costumes, blowing in the breeze of the fan the cools us off between costume changes.

The rotund mouse costumes. (These are the ones the company men wear, there are miniature versions for the kids.)

Daniel, pre-Tea costume, and Gwyneth moments before going onstage as Frau Stahlbaum.

Austin as the Soldier Doll.

Up close, a Marzipan costume… with it’s satin sweets. This has always been one of my favorites. Karinska costumes have such amazing detail!

Me and my “husband” Ralph.

With our coats and hats… ready for the party.

Stephanie wamps up for the snow scene, with Daniel in the background.

Party scene from the wings. (My couple shows up late to the party with the grandparents.)

Ralph, “full of Christmas Spirit” as he said, moments before going to the “partay“.

Happy holidays everybody!

Our egg nog and pajama party

sloan_thumb USA_flag Posted by Sloan

This past Tuesday, Doug and I had an Egg Nog and Pajamas get together at our house. Our tree is finally decorated, and I made some home-made egg nog (my first time, and it was a HUGE batch!) with this recipe for the occasion.

Doug created this fire DVD from an old clip of video he had from a friends house. Because of the scale, it kind of looks like our house is on fire…

I got Dougie and I matching happycorp pink-colored jammies, complete with little black and white kittys with santa hats on. Maybe not something I should be showing the world, but we thought they were funny.

Gwyneth, getting into her PJ’s.

The day of the party, the Playstation 3 that Doug ordered and thought wasn’t coming until January, arrived.

It then turned into an egg nog/jammies/video games affair. Pretty silly stuff.

Tara, Mark and Erin fighting aliens.

And towards the end of the night, everyone gathered ’round the LCD display, watching this and this. (Warning: click those links with caution.)

Friends

Daniel makes friends with the Nutcracker skeleton.
If you’ve never seen NYCB’s Nutcracker, this is the shell that magically flies off of the little boy after the battle scene when he becomes the prince!
