Hi David

Wow! The pictures are incredible!! You have no idea how privileged you are!! :) I wish I was there!

Sankai Juku is possibly one of the most amazing butoh groups. I have seen many pics - but none as beautiful as these.

Seeing these pics reminded me of the initial passionate interest I had when I discovered the world of Butoh 7 years ago. Butoh keeps on popping up everywhere I look: perhaps it is a sign - I need to delve deeper & explore it physically in my work. :)

You have just solved where I am going with my next work! Thanx :)

david
i just saw this performance in san francisco tuesday night. i have never been so moved by beauty. by the end, i was weeping. i felt as if i had finally articulated the struggle within and could visually see and physically feel the state of "peace" -- that pervading sensation left me in tears. i didn't want to move because i felt a resolution within myself that i knew would dissipate over time as I walked into the night. it was as you said – the casting of a spell over many people at once – i’ve never seen an audience so still, so quiet that you could hear a seat creaking if someone moved. this is real art. something indescribable and yet indelible on the soul – so personal both to artist and to observer that in any other context would be self-conscious – and yet the whole point of the dance seemed to be to force self-consciousness to the point of realization of consciousness beyond self – of the universal – of the eternal
i would walk 100 miles to see this again. anyone who has access to this performance should go.

David,

Wow! Those pics are amazing. The red looks like blood and is kinda spooky. I actually thought they were statues or sculptures at first. They appear almost ghostly, which I guess would be like being in a trance.

Best,
Chimene

Now I wish I wouldn't have missed this. I love posts like this, reading about what inspires you as an artist. You are such a beautiful writer -- and dancer. It's not fair!
