Thanks for clueing me into Article 19, Kate -- I'd just thought of them as an online magazine and for some reason didn't realize I could actually view some great videos there!

So, I explored the BalletLorent video excerpts this weekend and had Lorent totally wrong! I'd thought of her as a Lena Wertmuller type, like BondageBallet or something, ha ha ha :) Not that at all -- although, kind of an interesting idea, a Lena Wertmuller film as a ballet... hmmm. I did like La Nuit de La Femme (don't know if I have the name right ) and of course The Ball :) Schecther's work was really interesting as well. Hopefully, I can come see something while I'm in Blackpool... Anyway, thanks again for your excellent review of SDT!

I'm really interested in the creative process of dance making too - that's why our chat was such a pleasure...

I'm sure you haven't offended anyone with your comments on Lorent - interpreting what we see is a personal and subjective experience, and it's interesting to see what different people make of choreography. Unfortunately Luxuria wasn't in the programme at Stirling and I've not seen any of Lorent's work live. There are some short video exerpts of her work on the Article 19 website though - and some of Schechter's - which are interesting.

'Angels of Incidence' - the Benjamin piece - was fascinating and I have a fair amount to say about it - will post about it tonight.

I hope I didn't offend anyone with what I said above about Lorent. I'm just interested in that issue, that's all :) The Benjamin looks FASCINATING! Can't wait to hear what you thought!

Wow, great write-up, Kate! After attending the Nothing festival this weekend (look at the Foot in Mouth blog that Kristin links to if you're interested in what that was), I'm very intrigued by how choreographers work -- whether they start with an idea, or with music, or whether they start with nothing and the idea evolves as they go along, and how they feel about the interplay of dance and "meaning."

Am also interested in hearing what you thought of Luxuria. I feel like I already have a love-hate relationship with her :) (Lorent that is) after you and Chris Wheeldon have both linked to her now and my hand seems to keep clicking on that link. On one hand she seems, just from reading her own description of her prior work that is on her company's website, to be equating woman with body, erotic, lust, sex, etc., but, on the other, I'd imagine she's questioning that equation in some way or going way beyond that or taking it apart and examining it or she wouldn't be this visionary choreographer everyone wants to work with. Just interested in your interpretation, since it appeared from their website that that was on the program. Schechter's work looks interesting too, from the review you linked to.
