Career Transitions

From the archives… a backstage photo by Doug in 2005.
My face and lashes may thank me for my recent decision!

I sincerely apologize for taking my time in letting you all know about my recent transition. I’ve been trying to make this decision for many months, and once it all started happening I became so completely wrapped up in it (as I tend to do) that I couldn’t find the time to properly let you all know about it!

As of November 13th (approximately 3 weeks ago), I have taken on the role (or I guess I should say we have begun creating the role) of New Media Director for the New York City Ballet.

As many of you are already aware, I’ve been dealing with hip injuries throughout much of my career as a ballet dancer. Most recently, I have been fighting against the latest incarnation of pain my body has decided to throw at me, and have been unable to return to dancing after a year and a half of physical therapy and cortisone injections, and three prior surgeries. (Ballet is tough - it happens.)

But with the trust and freedom the company has so wonderfully given me over this time period, the amazing opportunities I have been offered to help the company in new ways, and the tremendous support many of you have shared with me, I have been able to further explore other artistic avenues within the dance field.

Through all the hard work, self-education (and fun) involved in these projects, I began to realize a new creative interest and passion for dance that didn’t require my body to be able handle the physical stress of ballet technique.

This summer I sat down with two of my (and everyone’s) guiding forces within the company, and was given all the options and encouragement a dancer and artist could hope for. The interest in my dancing abilities and potential was reiterated, after which the idea and option of a new position was raised. It was made clear that I was valued and wanted, but it was up to me to decide what I wanted to do.

It was thoughtfully stressed that I should take time in making this decision. I’ve spent the last three and a half months thinking about what I want to do, what my body will allow me to do, and where I want to go in the future.

Even though I will miss dancing more than I could ever predict at this point, I am so excited about this new opportunity. It is incredible to be able to research and think creatively about things that I am already so interested in outside of dance, bringing that passion together with my passion for dance and NYCB.

Anyhow, I’ll still be at Lincoln Center, running back and forth between the offices at the theater and WSD’s physical therapy across the street. I am still hoping to heal my hip to the point that I can dance in some capacity and be active in the future.

I will continue to post about my journeys and experiences in the dance world, from a slightly new perspective. Thanks again to our family of Winger readers for all your support (and of course my own family and friends who have helped me through this tough decision)!

Congratulations, Kristin. This is very exciting. NYCB is very farsighted to have (i) created this position and (ii) gotten you to take it. Your great work on the R+J videos demonstrates your talents and skills. And of course dancing is still in the picture. Wonderful news.

Hi Kristin:

I’m the person who interviewed you a few months back for the NYCB newsletter. I just wanted to congratulate you on your new position and wish you the best of luck. How great that you are staying in the company’s employ and helping them move into the future! Good luck.

Congrats, Kirstin! I know you will do a great job with this new role. Thank you for creating The Winger and making it a site I go to every day! Keep up the good work!

Kristin, as a longtime reader of this website, I want to congratulate you for the patience you’ve shown your body and for your courage in entering into this exciting and, hopefully, groundbreaking transition. I think the ballet world needs someone like you to champion the art form in inventive ways. If the popularity of this website is any indication, you are more than off to a good start.

I am just happy to hear all your good news after the torment you endured in hospitals and at physical therapy lo these many years.

You are a very good and kind and beautiful and smart person and I’m glad NYCB realized that they could not let you get away.

I am so happy that even my cold feels better.

Love, JIM

Kristin,

Having read the Winger for almost a year now, I can confidently say that this was/is a win win win decision for you, NYCB and the public. You are an amazing communicator and positive force in the arts and in dance in particular. I can think of no one more qualified to open up new avenues of communication about dance and ballet.

I anxiously await some of your “programs”. If the R+J work you did last Spring is any indication of what you can do… Look out Kristin is coming!

I hope that you win the battle with your injury and get to twirl on the stage again. I know you’ll struggle on with that.

Thanks for everything you have given us. Good luck and all the wind beneath your wings to you (leave some for my sails, please).

Fasten your seat belts ladies and gentlemen, this is going to be one amazing ride.

Congratulations on the new job Kristen! I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult the decision to retire from dancing must have been, but I think this new job will be so rewarding for you, given the nature of what you’ve been doing here at the Winger, and now with the(inter)mission ass well. You certainly do have a gift in terms of figuring out how to use “new media” to promote dance, and your accomplishments doing it on an amateur level have been considerable. I’m sure you will be an incredible investment for them as a professional. I recently had a chance to meet with a couple of people in the NYCB administration, and they seemed wonderful and passionate. I bet you’ll be very happy in this new role.

One thing NYCB has done especially well is give its younger dancers the chance to shine in other ways than on stage. This includes Kyle Froman’s recent book, Pauline Golbin’s interviews for the website, Sean Suozzi and Ellen Bar’s film version of Opus Jazz, and now Kristin’s new position, which I would hope is an outgrowth of the very clever Flash website created for Romeo and Juliet last season. Best wishes in your new job, Kristin.

Kristin,

Since a very young age, we immerse ourselves in this career, and rarely do dancers have the courage to make a decision that you have made. The important factor that you have always shown us Kristin, is that there are other sides of dance and life, past the physical aspect.

You will prosper in the next page! Just as you have prospered in this page of your life.

You are a true creative energy, and one that not only I, but all the readers of the Winger look to as a driving force of the dance world!

MANY CONGRATULATIONS!

Kristin. I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again…I’m so proud of you! It makes me ecstatic to hear that City Ballet is creating this very forward thinking position, but even more so that someone like you is taking it. As you’ve shown with so many projects recently, you have an incredible creative energy and it’s much needed in the ballet world. Thank you for all you’ve done and I look forward to the next chapter!

I also want to take this moment to thank you for being an inspiration to me in terms of blogging. It was because of The Winger (back almost two years ago) that I decided to start “Ranting Details.” I’m so proud to now be a part of The Winger family, and your getting me into the blogging universe has helped me through this past year. I really don’t know what I would have done without this support and this incredible outlet that you have been such a pioneer in. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Here’s to all of your future success and happiness.

There’s nothing really left to say that others haven’t said eloquently above. But I’m really glad that you are doing this with/for NYCB. I think it is such a great position and opportunity for both you and the company, and one that really makes exceptional use of your multiple talents and interests.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with next!

The new venture is perfect for you; you’ve already proven yourself with the R & J series last season. It’s an exciting opportunity for you and for NYCB.

Looking forward to your future projects, and to seeing you around the Plaza.

Hey Kristin,

We used to run into each other when I worked for City Opera and the State Theatre. Congrats on the upgrade–and for knowing when to say when. (My 52-year old mum dances as a side project and I cringe every time I see her do a triple pirouette out of fear that something is gonna pop!) Miss sneaking onto First Ring to watch NYCB (and the snow as evidenced by your last picture), but hopefully I’ll be at 66th street again soon. (In the meantime, thanks to websites such as the Winger, I’ve launched my own blog, http://cultureonthecheap.wordpress.com, for finding high culture on a low budget in Europe).

Cheers,
Olivia

Good luck Kristin! I think many of us on the admin side of dance are also waiting with anticipation to see how all this new media stuff can help out not only the big companies, but smaller regional companies with more limited budgets as well. With the ease and availability of all these Internet tools today, I can’t help but think there is something out there to reach significantly more audience members and donors.

Dear Kristin:

Congratulations on the career transition - I love your web site and look forward to all the creative juices you can bring to ballet and media.

Here are some ideas that are on my own wish list for ballet and media — opera is starting to catch on and I can’t wait for the ballet industry to catch on as well.

A pay per view style of subscribing for NYCB performances (for those of us NYCB fans and ex-SAB students who live far away from NYC now), on-line streaming — or podcast style viewing. I’d pay good $$ to be able to “subscribe” remotely. Programs such as these could create some serious revenue for NYCB and keep far away fans involved and in touch with the new generation of dancers we’re missing. Not to mention audience development!

Good luck with your new position.
All best,
Kelly

Even though I have yet to have the opportunity to meet you, I think you are amazing.

All dancers fear this transition regardless of how prepared or unprepared we feel. But how wonderful that you have so clearly found your other gifts and are able to manifest them into a new, exciting career.

A huge congrats, and all my best wishes and admiration,

Kristen:
Congratulations!!!

I have been a reader of the Winger since it was, well, just you. And I loved to see your life unfold as a dancer, and hip young New Yorker, me being of the very unhip, well maybe once hip, and aged New Yorker. Your posts just bring joy and sometimes sadness as I watch your life unfold. As an avid NYCBer for nearly 40 years, my wife and I see around 20 NYCB performances a year, the added dimension that your post provided of the life of a young dancer made it all that more interesting and exciting.

So first, THANK YOU. Second we will miss not seeing you dance for awhile (I am hopeful). And Third your will do absolutely great as a Media Mogul for NYCB. Hopefully you will make the web site sing and come up with lots of other brilliant engaging ideas. I can’t wait to see what unfolds. :-)

Many, many good wishes on your new adventure. The Winger is an amazing platform for dance and it will be great to see what you can do to put NYCB in front of a new audience. Dance is many things and certainly brings forth many emotions, but sometimes those who have never seen it live don’t realize that. You can show them the fun they are missing!

Best of luck to you! I know that losing dance as a day-to-day activity is awful and I can’t even imagine…but I know that you are exactly the right person for this new position, and it makes me REALLY happy that it’s in your capable hands. Dance gets ignored too much, especially ballet, and I know you’ll change that. *HUGS*!

William Gallagher said,

December 26, 2007 @ 5:36 pm

Hi,

You’ve never heard of me, I’m not even in the US, but many congratulations on the new role.

I admit it: I saw the iPhone ad you did and wondered if you were genuine or an actor (I’m a writer/journalist and I live in England, I can’t help but be a cynic). But whyever I came to the site in the first place, I’ve popped back occasionally because of the photography, the atmosphere - and because I’ve been terribly worried about your injuries.

Ballet is unwatchable for me because, despite the grace and beauty, I see dancers standing on their toes and I am yanked out of the performance, I am wincing at how they can do it. I admire the bravery and the skill, I just feel the agony. And while I’ve missed how exactly your injuries started, no one can read your text here without realising that there’s as much pain in your being unable to dance as there is physically.

So I do appreciate this change in role doesn’t fix that, but in all other ways it’s tremendous news. Just work on that physio!
