On the Manhattan Bridge… Sleepy on the long train ride home from Compañia Nacional de Danza 2 at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts.
The performance was really great. Before it started, after a few minutes of me and Erica trying to figure out why a contemporary company of such stature was performing so far out in brooklyn (far for us at least), to an audience of predominantly white-haired folks (perhaps due to the location?), we realized that we were seeing Duatos second company (pre-professional dancers, so i guess they’re a bit younger than the first company). Not that they left anything to be desired. They were soo amazing! Particularly in the last piece.
There’s no way i ever would have thought they were still students. And i just LOVE Duato’s choreography. There were also some very interesting things happening with the lighting design. At one point, the dancers looked like they were glowing as they danced against a wall. At another point, two dancers actually held spots on stage, directed at a couple dancing center stage. And at another point, a spot shining from the downstage corner of the stage created really intense shadows of the dancer on the backdrop. They probably have another performance tomorrow… Definitely try to see them!
