Public Domain Performance

Its been pretty quiet here on The Winger and in the dance blogosphere as a whole. Folks must be busy dancing or something. Go figure. Since I am tired of seeing my old post up there thought I would do some curating. This week I present to you two of my favorite videos.

The first video is Who’s Yehudi, song written in 1940 by Bill Seckler and Matt Dennis. The vocalist in this 1943 soundie is Lane Truesdale and completely mesmerizing. Despite the mildly anti-semitic depiction of Yehudi this video is really great. So Wingers, here is the million dollar question…who is Yehudi?

The second dance is A Jazz Etude danced by Billy Burt. This 1941 soundie has cool staging and amazing dancing. The music is really good too.

Both of these dance videos are Public Domain which makes showing them online completely legal. I am really glad nobody owns these. Otherwise I would probably never have seen them and definitely would not be able to share them with you. Two more points for open source media.

Download the ipod compatible formats of Who’s Yehudi and A Jazz Etude.

‘quiet in the dance blogosphere’… — Hey man, I posted yesterday! :)

I love old dance videos… I agree, there are a lot of things in the public domain that would never have been seen if artists’ estates owned the copyright AND were obsessively controlling about the viewing of it. Even if you do have a copyright on something, being so controlling severely limits your exposure to potential new audiences, I think.

Copyright law can be nuts… I’ve even seen a few defendants in criminal cases obtain copyrights on their names and then argue (orally and in motion papers) that every time the judge used the name, s/he was owed money. I am NOT kidding.

Hope to see you tonight at Forsythe?!
