I love old dance videos... I agree, there are a lot of things in the public domain that would never have been seen if artists' estates owned the copyright AND were obsessively controlling about the viewing of it.  Even if you do have a copyright on something, being so controlling severely limits your exposure to potential new audiences, I think.  

Copyright law can be nuts... I've even seen a few defendants in criminal cases obtain copyrights on their names and then argue (orally and in motion papers) that every time the judge used the name, s/he was owed money. I am NOT kidding.
