Red pen premonition?

hallberg_thumb | USA_flag | Posted by David Hallberg

In the final preparations of Met season, I am reminded of our winter tour… especially the last stop of Romeo and Juliet in Chicago. With injuries abound, many dancers filled in for others that couldn’t perform. Therefore, leaving me with three Romeos in three days. A feat that I never thought possible, considering it is the hardest male lead in the classical repertoire. Having done that, anything is possible right?

Here you see the red pen correcting, sometimes three times, the casting of one performance. During a season as long as the Met (8 weeks) the “red pen” in an inevitability.

On a lighter note… Just to share some publicity from the posters outside the Civic Opera House in Chicago. Paloma and I in a romantic moment from my debut as Romeo.

If I recall correctly David performed with Paloma last year of the year before in R&J… I loved that perfoemance and will be there this year.

One of the most stunning images of ballet was done of David and Paloma in the the final scene of R&J.

David, good to see you post again! :)
(But this isn’t because Tonya threatened to have your dance belt pic posted until you did, is it? :P )

The pic of you and Paloma is gorgeous, it really captures the tenderness combined with the sort of desperation that comes with that kind of love…

And thanks for showing us the red pen corrections, it’s always so fascinating to get that kind of peek behind the stage!
(Whenever I am at the studios of the companies here, I always read the messageboard for the dancers to see what’s going on, hehe! ;) )

:D

That ballet — particularly MacMillan’s version and particularly for those crazy beautiful pdds — is my favorite of all classical ballets. I know it’s the most difficult for the dancers too — so thank you for working so hard for us :)

Happy birthday soon too — a quarter of a century right?!!!

I can’t wait for next week!!!!! I’ll be seeing you on Thursday and Marcelo on Fri. and whoever / everyone on opening night :) How exciting!!!!!

Gracia :D That is so cool you have access to the dancer messageboards!!

I mean, re the whole red pen thing, at least I hope I’ll be seeing who I said above, but if not, it’s not like everyone in ABT isn’t awesome! So lead replacements aren’t a big deal :) We just worry about our favorites if s/he’s injured or sick or whatever :)

You were my favorite Romeo! And the best kisser (peasant bride). Have a wonderful Met season!

David,

I adored your R&J performance with Paloma in Chicago as you have probably already heard or read since I blogged considerably about each of your 3 performances. The balcony pdd kiss you gave Paloma was the best (hottest) one I’ve seen since Wayne Eagerling and Ms Ferri of the 1980’s. It was a pleasure to finally see you dance, and you deserve all the praise you’ve ever received. Best during the Met season.
