SUMMER SWANS (4)…to the floor

Here are a few more images of what a Swan Lake reharsal looked like last week as I was waiting to learn my entrance with Odette called the ‘’waterfall.'’ This is where the prince rushes in and lifts the white swan in an arabesque pressage while walking backwards in a diagonal downstage. As the prince walks by each swan, she must immediately fall to the floor and assume ’swan position’…(see the 2nd picture here) This creates a look similar to what might be called a ‘wave’ from a sports-viewing crowd. The prince cannot see where he is going though which means that if even one unlucky swan is out of line then she must face the unfortunate consequence of having foot briefly stepped on. There was a show I can rememeber where, due to a combination of an ill-footed prince and a few swans that may need contact lenses to acheive a more precise diagonal, all one could hear from the wings during this ‘’waterfall’ was ‘’ow-ouch-ow-ouch-ouch-ouch…'’ as the swans’ toes were trampled. The audience hopefully wasn’t aware of it, but I am sure the girls have paid closer attention to this part ever since….:)

I’ll try to put up a video of this part because it is so beautiful when done well….and sadly but secretly sort of entertaining when not. ;)

Here are the pretty ladies through the course of an afternoon reharsal….

Why do I love the picture of that girl’s torn tights so much!?! :) Usually when you see pics of ballet (either onstage or off) everything’s so pristine and perfect, so I couldn’t stop laughing at your TIGHTS WITH THE BIG OLE 6-PRONGED RUN!

Your recent posts are apt to us b/c ABT is right now in Swan mode as well. I saw your friend dance last night (D, not the other one), and speaking of goofy onstage mishaps, someone took a tiny little spill, but of course it wasn’t him! The spills don’t bother me at all (unless someone gets hurt of course, which this one didn’t) — in fact it kind of seemed to bring them to life; they went on to nail everything else and give a knockout performance bringing the audience wildly to its feet. But of course when the fall happened the whole audience went “OOOOOOOOhhhhh” and I just wonder what that sounds like backstage. Does everyone start laughing?

The legwarmer and torn tights shots are amazing. They’d be great posters for studios.

Hi Evan,
What lovely photos! I wasn’t aware that there is such a site and you are regularly contributing great images and reports(?)!!! I’ve got a ticket for the first evening of this Swan Lake on 13 June, and very much looking forward to the show - will you be performing on that day, too???
Please keep posting your wonderful images and updating us with all the news within the Stuttgart Ballet :-) )))
Cheers,
Chiko
P.S. By the way, probably you don’t remember, but I met you last Sunday (1 July) at a cafe, where I was having brunch with my friends. I just talked to Elisa when she was trying to make some waffle at the buffet. I was perfectly aware who you were and whom you were with, but I just didn’t dare to introduce myself… Sorry for being rather rude!

“The audience hopefully wasn’t aware of it” - oh yes, we saw that (hey, we’re the best audience in the world, what did you expect?!). You mean that famous Malakhov-Illmann performance where everything went wrong…?
I’m looking forward to see you as prince Siegfried in autumn!

Tights!! they suffer so much punishment in Ballet..my students rip tights then scissor cut them up to make tie belts or hairbands.

Hi Evan, I was very positively surprised to see you as Siegfried at the opera house yesterday! You were the most beautiful Prince Siegfried I’ve ever seen on the stage, I must say. Personally I really liked the chemistry between you and Anna… The audience also seemed to be really happy with your utterly inspiring and fresh performance. Congratulations!
Wishing you good luck for your performance as Lenski this coming Saturday - pity that I won’t be able to be in the theatre! Well, just wanted to send this quick note - must go back to work ;-) Take care!
