I’m laying low this week. Turns out I have bronchitis. Bummer. But at least I’m at a point right now where I have the ability to really let myself rest (even if it’s against my will).

One of the challenges of being a dancer and depending on your body so much is that when you get sick, it becomes extra challenging, particularly during performance season. You go through it in your head….

How sick am I? If I take today off, or at least take it easy in rehearsals so that I can do the performance, will that be enough rest to feel better?
If I fight through now will I be able to sweat it out?
Do I have time between rehearsals to go to the doctor to get medicine?
I’m really sick but my bosses have told me it is going to be very difficult to replace me for this evening’s performance. Do I get through it and risk blowing the rest of the week? Or make the decision that I absolutely cannot perform?

As I’ve sat and watched some tv the last few days, I came across a feature on how all the competitors on Dancing With the Stars are falling like flies… and most importantly, is the show cursed?

Hmm… most likely it isn’t. I’d attribute it to the fact that dancing is HARD!! Hard on your body, hard on your mind… and if your body isn’t used to an intense environment like that, it has a tendency to shut itself down as a way of telling you to take it a little easier. You wouldn’t jump into a five set tennis match, or a marathon, without having sufficient training. We have to ease ourselves back into rehearsal season after even just a week off.

Maybe they could consider giving the contestants a little more time to build up to the competition…? I don’t know. But what I do know is that dancers are athletes, and there’s probably more training involved than people might think.

Best wishes on a speedy recovery! Glad to hear you’re taking some downtime to recover - it’s for the best! This may sound wrong/selfish, but you have to put yourself first when it comes to health matters, so try not to feel so guilty! Athletes always have the hardest time mentally dealing with illness. Nobody likes to be slowed down, but athletes tend to have much, much higher expectations for physical performance than the average person, making it seem all that worse. Get some sleep, drink lots of fluids, and good luck!! :)

Oh my, Bronchitis!! Don’t take any milk product!! that makes harder.. I usually get it when I get cold or flue…
at least you are enjoying your resting. But yes it is a question about do you dance or rest?
I had a very bad Kidney Infection during 2000 Joyce season. I went to the doctor and he told me ” if you dance tonight, we will be in the hospital tomorrow. that is your choice.” Got a IV for 3 hours, then got home. and stayed. I could not even walk by my self, So Stephen came to pick me up. He called my director. Even the next day, I could not move with high fever, could not even stand up, but director was expecting a call from me…so I finally made to call, tell them I am not able to dance… SO I did not dance on Fri,Sat and Sun…That was my first time missing the performances in my life..

But you really have to take care yourself. You are the only knows what is going on in your body, how you feel.
SO TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF!!

Sorry your sick. I had a DR who told me eating pears helps to clear the chest congestion! I don’t really know if it works but I always do it! Great time of year to eat them too!
Feel better:))

Yes! Pears! I have heard that too, Veronica…and you are right, they are super juicy and delicious right now.
Mega vitamin C, too…and tons of fluids 24/7…and very long, hot baths.

I have always thought of dancers as ‘artistic athletes’…

I forwarded your aritcle to my daughter…last year she received a verbal blasting because she had a double ear infection during Nutcracker. She thought at the time she had sabbotaged her entire career, but has now come to a different understanding. Thank you for your continued insight!
Take care of yourself (bronchitis comes back easily if you don’t recuperate completely)- Michelle

So glad I finally outgrew getting bronchitis every winter, but I wouldn’t mind spending a free week doing exactly what you are doing in the pic…my idea of luxury…

Actually I think it’s the DWTS’s parents who are cursed! Best of luck on your recovery. How, though, would be able to dance on stage without breaking into a coughing fit?

Aw Kristin, I hope you feel better soon. Have you ever used essential oils? I have some great stuff that really helped me get better when we all passed bronchitis around the Camelot cast. I had to fly and it was right when the TB man was in the news- I had to explain that I knew it wasn’t TB to my seatmates. :-(
Anyway, the essential oil products helped immensely.
Take care!!

so good to see every one wishing you well … :)
what a community - wow!

don’t forget the good old “hot toddy”
it works like a charm and really gets the body sweating to rid it of all the gunk.

I use whiskey / brandy, milk and honey
into that I add some WELEDA infludo
(dunno if you know it - it is a german homeopathic product,
but echinacea works just as well)
then take two head ache tabs and rest.
you’ll feel a lot better in the morning.

i’m finally starting to feel better -yay!

and thanks to all of you, we all know a whole bunch of great ways to feel better in the face of chest congestion!
i tried the pears by the way. not sure if they helped, but they sure tasted good.
hot toddy sounds like a nice idea too. now that the medication is done, i’ll have to get on that.

xxox

How did you get over your back and hip injury? What type of treatments or therapy was used? As someone with back injuries I am searching for some therapy that may be effective.

Sorry to read that you’re feeling ill. Hopefully you’re one step closer to a full recovery today.

Excellent and thought provoking points regarding the athleticisim of dancers and the toll it takes on one’s body. Even at the lowest levels such as basic lessons - and that’s where I certainly reside - it’s amazing to see how mentally and physically tired one can become.
