The Crucial [Unofficial] Member of New York City Ballet

JUSTIN PECK
New York City Ballet
New York, NY USA
BIO | POSTS

Emma Redpath, New York City Ballet’s newest apprentice, will make her debut this season, dancing in ballets such as Carnival of the Animals and the Firebird, as well as understudying the principal “yappy dog” role in the second act of Double Feature!

Ok, fine. Maybe she’s not the newest dancer with City Ballet, but she is sort of the unofficial mascot of the company. She’s a companion of one of the ballet masters here, and can be found socializing with dancers in the dancers lounge, strolling the hallways of the New York State Theatre, lunching at Fiorello’s with her colleague Biscuit (a dog friend who belongs to one of the pianists), and even overseeing important rehearsals (pictured above, giving principal dancer Andrew Veyette some pointers on his Jerome Robbins repertoire).

Maybe someday she’ll graduate to being one of Hippolyta’s hounds in Midsummer Night’s Dream!

She looks pooped! But it’s nice to see that NYCB is such an animal-friendly place. Does the donkey from Union Jack ever stick around for rehearsals or schmoozing in the lounge?

It’s interesting that the workplace is so pet friendly here. So many buildings and establishments are anti dog with reasons given such as people are afraid of them or insurance.

I don’t see the big deal, but they can be distracting I suppose… and they do require walks to empty them. I personally like having animals around and don’t get Americans who are so anti animal. It’s completely different in France.

Justin,

My obsession with Goldens goes back from my childhood, having one or two in the house at all times until I moved out. If you have any more pictures, POST THEM! These dogs make anyone instantly happier, and bring such light into life!

Matt Murphy can attest..

[…] I usually try and keep posts to a dance related subject, but I couldn’t resist after Justin’s post about the Unofficial member of City Ballet. So here are a few more of the extended family of David Hallberg…. […]

Very cute picture…

Justin - I am assuming you wearing the super bright orange pants? Right?

they’re pretty snazzy… plus, you did a great job of hiding the camera in the file folders in the reflection in the mirror.

If you’re not wearing the orange pants… please tell whoever’s wearing them that they’re snazzy!
