The secret is out

BIO | POSTS

For the past three months or so I’ve been working hard, gathering footage and piecing it together…

I’ve been given the opportunity to show, through video over the internet, the behind-the-scenes of the making of New York City Ballet’s new full-length production of Romeo + Juliet. The ballet will have its premier at the company’s Spring Gala on May 1st, but the new mini-site (tragiclovenyc.com designed by ink&co and built by IMA) where the video diary episodes will continue to be posted went live on Thursday.

At least one new episode will be posted each week, from now until the show premiers… so this is pretty much what my computer screen will look like for the next month and a half.

It’s been a lot of fun getting to interview the people involved in the production, and to see and shoot some of the things that I usually do not see. I’m so glad that NYCB is embracing the power of the internet (sounds cheesy but true) and making this happen. I’m excited to get to share the experience with everyone and I hope you enjoy it!

Kristin,

This is a wonderful project and very much in the spirit of the winger. It will be such an honor to be able to see this work coming together and how amnazing it will be to then see the finished product! . As someone who has never been on the other side of the proscenium, but one who loves ballet, this project promises to be one hell of a lesson about creative people working together. What a an idea!

I’m psyched and will be looking for each new “episode”.

Get well soon!

New obsession alert! What an exciting project. I look forward to upcoming “episodes,” and the final production.

Wow! What fun! I not only envy you the opportunity to create this site/video, I think it’s the perfect vehicle for NYCB to educate and seduce new fans. I can’t wait to see the episodes unfold.

I do have a question for you Kristen: what software package are you using to create this?

Behind the Scenes Look at NYC Ballet’s Upcoming Romeo + Juliet…

Terrific job, Kristin! I might end up actually liking ROMEO & JULIET…always thought it was a lumpy score with too much ‘acting’ and not enough ‘dancing’. Let’s see what Peter comes up with.

Kristin, whoever came up with this idea, it’s a brilliant marketing tool. I was pretty sure I’d be buying tickets; now I’m defintiely excited and suspense is building. Do you think a DVD will be made of the production eventually? for the moment, is it possible to download the clips?

i agree - it’s building up great momentum and publicity for the show, b/c you start to appreciate more what goes into making a ballet. i love the footage! can’t wait for the next installments.

Love the site’s black + red graphics — a little echo of The Winger. And that’s a nifty dagger.

Congratulations, Kristin! A great effort, and I’m quite impressed with the results so far. It’s good to see you so actively involved in the production!

[…] Today’s New York Times’ Arts and Leisure section contains the first real article I’ve seen by the new chief dance critic, Alastair Macauley. There was a bit of controversy caused by his appointment because of his sex and the fact that he’s from London, not New York (thus arguably bypassing several female critics far more familiar with the New York dance scene). So, since there will probably be a lot of scrutiny of his first few writings, let’s join in and make him feel REALLY welcome, ha ha! Just kidding Anyway, this article is on the current Romeo and Juliet trend: the ballet is being performed by both ABT and the New York City Ballet this upcoming season; ABT is doing the 1965 version by Sir Kenneth MacMillan (my favorite!!!), and NYCB will be doing a new version choreographed by their artistic director Peter Martins. Kristin Sloan of the Winger (and a NYCB dancer of course!) has helped put together a behind-the-scenes video of the upcoming production, which can be viewed on the NYCB website, here. I also linked to it in my blogroll, on the right, under Dance: Ballet, etc. It’s a lot of fun to watch and see how the dancers learn to sword-fight and all that great stuff, so do check it out! Click here to read her post where she talks about it. […]
