Ashley Laracey, applying her make up in the dressing room before Thursday night’s performance.

Hey Guys!

As many of you already know, this past Tuesday marked the opening night of NYCB’s spring
season! As a tribute to Lincoln Kirstein, the company performed a series of all-Balanchine programs throughout the week, a total of ten ballets in all. It’s always a wonderful feeling to begin performing again after being away from the stage for a long period of time, but there was something particularly satisfying about coming back to perform so many classic Balanchine masterpieces all at once.

Of course, performing a week’s worth of classic Balanchine programming can also be quite a challenge. In fact, some of the most famous Balanchine works are also some of the most demanding in our repertory. Ballets like Symphony in C, Square Dance and Concerto Barocco are all known for their technical demands, as well as for the ways in which they test your stamina and endurance. It’s a good thing the female corps was feeling refreshed and energized last week, because we were all really dancing our butts off!

On another note, the company completely switched gears last night for the open dress rehearsal of Romeo + Juliet. After so many hours of rehearsing in the studio, it was really exciting for the company to finally perform the ballet in front of an audience. Since my cast won’t perform the ballet until Thursday night, I was able to watch last night’s rehearsal from the front of the house. It was so interesting to experience the ballet with people who were seeing it for the first time! Speaking of, were any of the winger readers in attendance last night?

Gwyneth, it was great seeing you as a demi in SYMPHONY IN C and also to see Ashley in AGON…the Balanchine programs were beautifully presented and everyone’s dancing so well.

Yes! I was at the dress rehearsal last night; it was so fun and I really enjoyed it. I sat with a few friends in the Third Ring on the left, so we had a nice view of the stage. I thought the moving set was very cool, and the costumes looked really nice. Sterling Hyltin and Robert Fairchild were beautiful!! I also loved Joaquin de Luz and Daniel Ulbricht and it was great to see Jock Soto on stage again! (he was so scary when he slapped Juliet, the whole audience gasped!) The whole cast did a great job and everyone danced beautifully.
I did see dancers sitting in the first two rows in the orchestra (I couldn’t tell who many of them were since it was dark but I was pretty sure I saw Andrew Veyette). I thought it was pretty exciting when I came back to my seat during intermission and discovered that the curtain was up and all the dancers were warming up onstage — a nice peek at what goes on when the curtain’s down. Peter Martins came on amid the dancers and introduced many of the people involved, all of whom had been in various episodes on TragicLove.
I think this dress rehearsal was a great idea and I hope they do it again! Gwyneth, good luck and merde to you, Kristin and Sophie!

No, but I’m looking forward to seeing R & J on Thursday, so I’ll be cheering you on.

Thanks for the little write-up, Sophie B! My friend went and sat in orchestra but I haven’t heard from her about what she thought (I know she went to YAGP perf yesterday too, so she is probably busy :) ) I can’t wait for tonight!!!
