Winger Friends in Vienna

Hi everybody,

I wanted to share with you some fantastic text and photos that were thoughtfully sent to us from Urszula, a Winger reader and dance enthusiast who is spending a semester studying in Vienna, Austria.

From Urszula:

“Greetings from Vienna! On the eleventh day of the eleventh month the winter ball season officially begins and last week I attended the 66th Vienna Philharmonic ball at the Vienna Musikverein. The beautiful golden main auditorium is transformed into a dance hall with floral arrangements and red carpet. It is probably most well known as the venue for the New Year’s Concert. This year’s opening ceremony was conducted by Mariss Jansons who led the orchestra with music by the Strauss family, Franz Lehar and Carl Michael Ziehrer.

After the traditional fanfare a specially choreographed dance is performed by couples. In 2000, Mr. Thomas Schäfer Elmayer, of Elmayer-Vestenbrugg School of Dance was appointed as Master of Dance for the ceremony. At the end of the opening ceremony he announces “Alles walzer!”, which is German for “Everybody waltz!” and the guests take to the dance floor.

At midnight he directs the “Publikums-Quadrille”, where everyone can take part in a big dance. In the main auditorium there were waltzes, polka and swing music. In other halls there was also jazz, contemporary music and a traditional “Heuriger” that serves Austrian wine. A very elegant and glamorous Viennese evening!”

Doesn’t it look like a movie? I was extra excited to see these pictures, because just a few days ago I was speaking with a friend who was about to leave for Vienna and Budapest to go to a few of these. I had never heard of these events, and when he told me about them I was instantly intrigued. How can I go to one? I have to apply? How long is the waiting list? It sounds like so much fun! Now after seeing these photos from Urszula, I really want to go. Doesn’t it look and sound amazing?!

She says she also came upon these Hungarian break dancers in a Viennese city square…

Urszula, thank you SO much for sharing and good luck with your studies!

I’m definitely sending this post to my ballroom-dancer / enthusiast friend, who’s Viennese. No wonder she’s so good — I think the Viennese grow up with ballroom dancing… Thanks Urszula!

Wow, this is so cool. Just like we see on movies and stuff. Like in the 1700’s :)
Thanks for sharing! It’s awesome!

I wouild imagine these are coveted and pricey tickets.

And speaking about pricey… how do dancers feel about their compensation?

We know how much athletes are paid.. and rock stars and so on. I suspect that dancers are terribly underpaid… This bothers me terribly.

How do you feel about this… Can it change and what would make it more fair?

Considering how much training and expense a dancer goes through I sense that this is a very unfair situation.., almost one of exploiting the dancer’s love of their art so much that they accept being underpaid for the opportunity to dance… Is this happening subconciously?

Hello All!
New York does have its own Viennese Ball every end of January organized by the Austrian community. It used to be held at the Waldorf, it may still. I used to work with an attorney who represented the Austrian Consulate, the Austrian Trade Commission and everything Austrian, and every year, he was invited to the Viennese Ball in New York. You might want to check with the Austrian Cultural Center.
Prost!

Hi Lili! — Ha ha, it’s actually tonight! (or at least the rehearsal is…) 8 pm at the Waldorf. But I think you have to be invited?…. I should check it out…

Okay, so the dress rehearsal is tonight, 8pm at Waldorf. It’s supposedly open to everyone, but you also might have to be on a list?… so, it’s one of those things… Anyway, if anyone is interested in crashing the Ball rehearsal maybe I will see you there, ha ha!

Tonya
You either are invited or you can buy a ticket for the latter part if my memory serves me correctly (it has been more than 10years) .You can crash the Ball toward the end, when all the old foggies have gone home and the younger generation takes over!!!!!!……

[…] I saw a few familiar faces in the show — one guy, Charlie, who used to take lessons at my studio, and another guy, who I think is another dance blogger. Anyway, Mika had invited me to audition to be in the show, but I had to decline since I know very little Viennese waltz. But the dancing was so lovely, and I really would love to learn it — so perhaps a goal for next year… Or one better, attend the real thing?! […]

[…] Apparently, we here in New York aren’t the only ones who know a thing or two about shaking a leg and DNCNG HRD. In a recent blog post by LVHRD/New York City Ballet member and The Winger founder Kristin Sloan, it turns out that Vienna is also a hot spot for getting up just to get down. […]
