As some of you may already know, Cedar Lake Dance Company was generous in inviting New York dance bloggers to attend a dress rehearsal last week for their current Winter Season, which runs through January 19th.
They invited everyone a bit early, which gave us a chance for a wine-and-cheese-accompanied mingle before the performance.
We invited all our New York Winger contributors (many of whom were able to come!), and also brought along the talented Mr. Dave Franzese, an artist/designer/writer who saw Cedar Lake last season (I couldn’t attend and Doug invited him in my place) and became a fan.
He works for thehappycorp and writes for LVHRD’s blog, so look for an entry about CL over there soon as well.
I think it’s great that Cedar Lake has welcomed dance bloggers in such a unique way, but I also wonder… maybe next time, they might also think about inviting more writers from cultural/arts blogs. They most likely get more traffic than traditional dance blogs, have a more diverse audience that may not initially think they would like dance but could be open to it, and the writers would probably not be writing formal dance reviews - meaning that the casual non-dance-fanatic reader would be able to connect with what they were writing about (design, overall artistry, space, audience, etc) easier than a discussion about choreographic composition and dance technique (which has it’s place and purpose as well, but may not be as digestible for someone who doesn’t see a lot of dance or read a lot of reviews).

A good turn out…

Before the show started, Swan (the short name for their Artistic Director Benoit-Swan Pouffer) came to the front of the audience and welcomed everyone. While the show-slash-dress-rehearsal was also for friends and family of CL, he also took a moment to thank the bloggers for coming. Afterwards he was generous in holding a little Q&A with us.
More soon, when I get the photos from Doug’s trusty D200 [photos above by him as well]…
