The Rolling Stones… Eight storeys high (at Sony Lincoln Square/IMAX). The opening documentary style stuff was smaller, then when the actual show (shot at the Beacon Theater) begins, Scorsese blasts you with the full IMAX screen. It’s pretty amazing, although two hours becomes a bit long to feel like you’re at a live Rolling Stones show, but to just be sitting quietly in a movie theater. I’d definitely recommend checking it out though.
It’s interesting to see what a film director does with a live performance… and no definitive set list.

I was at a Stones concert in the late 60s. They were still kind of an alternate band. It was too loud and the usual fan madness. I think it was the last rock concert I ever attended. Don’t miss them as I grew to prefer “real” music of different genres since then. Loud and distortion and unintelligible lyrics is not my idea of music. And rock stars usually typify self indulge on a scale never before seen. ICK

Rolling Stones? The most overrated rock act ever, right beside Jimi Hendrix.

From the same era there were probably 500 superior bands–from Steely Dan to Echo and the Bunnymen.

There’s a great interview with Mick and Keith at Fancast where they talk about working with Scorsese on this, and how he did something as simple as showing the instruments instead of the cliche shot during a song. Keith says, “How many times have we all watched fingers going up and down fretboards? The thing that Marty did with it was he turned the observation into a Rembrandt. It shows the beauty of the guitars themselves. It wasn’t just who was playing them. It was the loving shots of the instruments themselves, which I found very, very, very nice.” Check out the interview at http://bigpicture.fancast.com/2008/04/fancast_interview_mick_jagger.html
