Not sure if I mentioned it in my preview post, but this latest ad hoc Ballet show uses a fair amount of flour. Needless to say, this morning it feels like there is glue in my lungs. Here is some of the evidence from dress rehearsal:

ad hoc Ballet is performing this week at DNA! Starting Thursday and going through Sunday matinee. I hope you all can make it. The work is definitely a departure from what we did last May at Lincoln Center. Nary a pointe shoe in site, though there is the waltz from Swan Lake.

Hope you all can make it!!

Recently, I was being teased about carrying such a gigantic backpack. Until then I honestly had never really noticed that my bag was so outsized compared to the non-dance world. Not to mention, it is often only one of two pieces of “luggage” that I carry on any given weekday. And so I thought about all of you and all of your dance bags and figured this was the place for understanding.

{Photo of my bags at the end of my day today. In backpack (designated bag for ad hoc Ballet and teaching): Couple pairs of pointe shoes, flat shoes, shawl, wool socks, various other dance clothes/legwarmers, postcards, granola, orange, nalgene bottle, ballet music cd’s, ipod, lipgloss, calendars. In tote bag (designated for LOLAstretch and life): powerbook, files and to do lists, novel, Harper’s magazine, journal/sketchbook, treo, a/c adapters, more calendars, shipments of leotards etc. if I haven’t been by the P.O. already, pens, digital camera, glasses, sunglasses, more lipgloss, wallet, cloth bag for any random food/fabric/misc. shopping because I hate acquiring more plastic bags. }

OK, I admit it is a little ridiculous……but when everything you do is freelance, on-the-go……..and it is so much worse when I am in the middle of costuming. I’m not the only one, am i??

Open Rehearsal

This afternoon ad hoc Ballet had an open rehearsal at DNA. Apparently, it is completely open to the public, not just donors and vip’s of the organization, which I have to say is a very cool concept. So if you are ever on Chambers St. some afternoon with a little time on your hands, check their board outside and there might be an artist-in-residence to observe mid-process.

Today it was just me and Deborah Lohse (director and choreographer) and we were working on a group section for 13 dancers and I was helping her work out a solo for herself. So when our small group of guests popped in, they observed Deb and I dancing as though we were in a large group and me doing an early run through of the solo. Again, many hats. Is this a theme? Obviously I do enjoy being the go-to girl, so I guess it would naturally follow that art does imitate life (and work?).

{Deb giving the open rehearsal audience an intro to the work. }

I am fairly spent after another long day of being in the studio teaching and dancing and trying to maintain a grip on LOLAstretch via five minute breaks on my treo, but can’t help feeling lucky that there is so much work to be done; hats to be tried on for the moment or worn for the long haul.

Dancing Days

Back to rehearsing with ad hoc Ballet this week in preparation for our show at Dance New Amsterdam in May. Great to be in the studio as a dancer! My day began with a pilates session at Body Tonic — it was like waking up on the right side of the bed and feeling your calves release and your abs engage. Thanks Jack! Then off to rehearsal, back to the office to check for a shipment for LOLAstretch that didn’t arrive, and then off to Creative Arts to teach my ballet students there. Then got back to the office late and had an emergency costume meeting for New Chamber Ballet. More on that design later this week.

Tomorrow is the reverse, starting with teaching a technique class at 9 am in CT and then off to hopefully ship a bunch of LOLAstretch orders that my customers have been patiently and sometimes impatiently waiting for (It is hard for me not to feel bad when someone is upset about their order being late, but we are making huge strides on the manufacturing side although custom stuff is still often running behind, so I just have to be patient, be diligent and try to pass that sentiment on to my customers. I am simultaneously trying to grow a tougher skin.), and then an open rehearsal at DNA to finish off the afternoon.

Hopefully, I will have photos from the studio and news of lots of shipping tomorrow or at least notice of making it to Wednesday.

Clock In

Clock Out

Those are a.m. and p.m., respectively. Think it is time to actually start working on having a real cut off time. (not just talk/blog about it) I can’t imagine I am alone in this, at least in this city;-).
