BIO | POSTS

Many dancers in the company (Ashley Bouder in particular) have worked very hard at gathering numerous items to auction off to benefit GMHC through AIDS Walk New York. The New York City Ballet team did the walk which took place on May 18th, organized by dancers and some wonderful NYCB volunteers. They are still raising money - up until June 10th. (Check out Philip’s photos from the walk at Oberon’s Grove).

View the EBAY auctions to see if there is anything you like. There are signed shoes, tote bags, programs… and 100% of the final auction price will be donated.

This first round of auctions will end around noon tomorrow - 5/27.

We will be listing a few more 3-day auction items tomorrow including 2 signed posters and four prints by Kyle Froman.

Thanks to NYCB AIDS Walk Team member Carron Leon, we now have three more items available for auction to benefit GMHC (through the NYCB AIDS Walk Team).

First is two items together,

- The boxed version of the book “Tributes“, singed by NYCB Director Peter Martins, and
- A pair of Darci Kistler’s pointe shoes, signed by Ms. Kistler herself.

The second is

- A poster of Baryshnikov in Le Jeune Homme et La Mort, (not signed).

See all available auction items
HERE. Three more days remaining on the R+J items, and these items above have 5 more days remaining.

Carron was also sweet enough to include a photo of some of the NYCB AIDS Walk Team members at the start point this past Sunday.

Benefit Auctions

We are now auctioning off two NYC Ballet Autographed Romeo + Juliet Posters, as well as an autographed R+J Tshirt on ebay. The starting price for each item is $10.00, the shipping is Free, and all the money will be donated to the NYCB AIDS Walk Team.

Unfortunately this got delayed, and the actual walk took place this past weekend. But fortunately, the money from the sale of these items can still be donated to the Team.

The auctions started this afternoon and will last 5 days. You can view all three HERE. If you have any questions, let me know.

Good luck!

Going Too Far?

The Scottish Ballet recently auctioned off, via ebay, a “dinner for two” with one of their soloist dancers (Either Soon Ja Lee, or the hilarious Jarkko Lehmus… check out his blog at ballet.co.uk) at Glasgow’s swanky Hallion Club .

I think if the dancers are fine with it (and you’ll read in Jarkko’s blog that he is), and it is done in a classy way (which it seems like this was), it’s probably a fun way for the dancer to feel like they are helping raise significant money for the company they love, and also getting to share conversation with someone who also shares a passion for dance. Any people that I have met, either at a gala dinner, a sponsored cocktail party, a special donor event, or even just in the lobby of a theater, I have always enjoyed chatting and trying to understand that person’s love of dance and where they are coming from. It’s so interesting to me.

Others may not agree, and I can see how this scenario could rub people the wrong way, especially when many people feel dancers do not always get the respect they deserve. But there are many people out there who have huge respect for dancers and for dance as an artform, and would love to be able to interact with the artists they admire. Any fundraising scenario is very similar to this situation, even if a bit less personal (galas, studio talks, cocktail parties, etc.), trying to bring the audience closer to the artists in a sophisticated and meaningful way. Heck, that is what we are trying to do here. What do you think, is auctioning a dinner date too far? Maybe it is.

The Scottish Ballet does a great job getting the word out about their company, aside from creative fundraising ideas (a myspace page, a fantastic email newsletter, and a great website). I hope the auction was successful!
