Due to popular demand . . .
Since I’ve been posting about my experiences with Gaga, I have gotten a few questions about where people can take classes. Here’s some answers:
First, there is a Gaga intensive going on this summer in Tel Aviv, Israel. Above is the advertisement, and for more information, you can contact Reut directly at the e-mail listed there.
Not in Israel or not able to come here? There are going to be a few summer Gaga and repertory intensives in the U.S. Ariel Freedman, an American who has been dancing with the Batsheva Ensemble, will be teaching from July 14-26 at the Baryshnikov Art Center in New York. The classes are already full, but there may be a wait list. To learn more about this workshop, go to this link: http://www.baryshnikovdancefoundation.org/schedules_gaga.html
If you’re on the West Coast, Bobbi Smith - another American who has been dancing with the Ensemble - will be teaching at an intensive held by the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. You can check out this program at the following link: http://www.sfconservatoryofdance.org/intensives/index.htm
Enjoy! If anyone takes either of these workshops, I’d love to hear about it!
I still browse the New York Times arts page every morning, and I saw that Cedar Lake performed Ohad Naharin’s Decadance as part of the Joyce Theater’s 25th anniversary festivities; did anyone in NYC make it to the concert? Back here in Israel, the Batsheva company is *very* busy. In the next month and a half, I’ll be seeing Naharin’s MAX and Shalosh (Three), Sharon Eyal’s Makarova Kabisa (a new work which premiered earlier this year), and Furo, a collaboration between Naharin and the Japanese animation artist Tabaimo which will be at Tel Aviv’s port over the course of a few weeks. Plus there are plenty of concerts by other companies which I’m planning to attend, as well as end-of-year performances at arts high schools and academies. Spring is busy here!
Meanwhile, I’m off to join in festivities for Israel’s 60th birthday. There’s supposed to be some folk dancing near the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, so perhaps I’ll get to experience a different kind of Israeli dance . . .

Here are a few more photos I took at Cedar Lake’s “Glassy Essence” installation. There are SIX more shows this weekend so check it out for yourself if you get a chance!

After missing every blogger get together throughout the past year (due to being out of town or consumed by the insanity of life), I finally managed to make it to one last night, and oh what a get together it was! Cedar Lake invited a group of 85 people (including a collection of fantastic dance bloggers) to be the first ever audience for their new “installation,” Glassy Essence.
Along with the information about the performance that Cedar Lake sent out to us, they made sure to let us know that we were allowed to bring cameras and encouraged to photograph the show. This is just one of many ways in which Glassy Essence is an atypical evening.
When we walked in, the gorgeous theater space had been cleared of the usual bleachers and instead had a large table in the center, a wall with blocks reaching out of it, and curtains with images projected on them lining the walls. As the lights went down, the cameras came out, and the dancers devoured every inch of the space thanks in part to inventive contraptions and scenery which helped them explore the vertical space the high ceiling has to offer.
The 40-minute show was such a visual wonderland that I hardly removed my camera from my face at all. I guess I’ll have to return, sans camera, to experience it all again. Check out Oberon’s Grove for an in-depth review of the evening! It was a pleasure to finally meet so many fellow bloggers!

Talked to one of the dancers the other night and it sounds like the unpredictability of this type of performance is both a bit nerve racking and exciting for them - I bet!
They’re testing out some new technology for after the show as well. Looking forward to it!

As some of you may already know, Cedar Lake Dance Company was generous in inviting New York dance bloggers to attend a dress rehearsal last week for their current Winter Season, which runs through January 19th.
They invited everyone a bit early, which gave us a chance for a wine-and-cheese-accompanied mingle before the performance.

Sloan, Dave, and David.
We invited all our New York Winger contributors (many of whom were able to come!), and also brought along the talented Mr. Dave Franzese, an artist/designer/writer who saw Cedar Lake last season (I couldn’t attend and Doug invited him in my place) and became a fan.
He works for thehappycorp and writes for LVHRD’s blog, so look for an entry about CL over there soon as well.
I think it’s great that Cedar Lake has welcomed dance bloggers in such a unique way, but I also wonder… maybe next time, they might also think about inviting more writers from cultural/arts blogs. They most likely get more traffic than traditional dance blogs, have a more diverse audience that may not initially think they would like dance but could be open to it, and the writers would probably not be writing formal dance reviews - meaning that the casual non-dance-fanatic reader would be able to connect with what they were writing about (design, overall artistry, space, audience, etc) easier than a discussion about choreographic composition and dance technique (which has it’s place and purpose as well, but may not be as digestible for someone who doesn’t see a lot of dance or read a lot of reviews).

A good turn out…

Before the show started, Swan (the short name for their Artistic Director Benoit-Swan Pouffer) came to the front of the audience and welcomed everyone. While the show-slash-dress-rehearsal was also for friends and family of CL, he also took a moment to thank the bloggers for coming. Afterwards he was generous in holding a little Q&A with us.
More soon, when I get the photos from Doug’s trusty D200 [photos above by him as well]…

Okay, so I’m a little behind the blogging times (even though it’s only been 48 hours since this event…) but I just HAD to write about the blogger meetup hosted by Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet on Wednesday. We saw a dress rehearsal performance followed by a quick q&a with Artistic Director Benois-Swan Puffer. You may have seen Kristin’s (real time!) photos of it. What a great night, and what a great show!
My actual review of the performance can be seen here on ExploreDance.com. They have such a nice facility there in Chelsea, and some truly great dancers. Each of the three pieces we saw at the dress rehearsal performance were different but equally exciting.
Perhaps MORE exciting for me, though, was meeting fellow bloggers. Of course I had already met Kristin in an interview for my article in movmnt (coming out in early February!), but this was the first time meeting some of the other online dance writers whom I mentioned in my thesis research and who I read so often!
Before the performance there was snacks and mingling for all of us, and I was quickly introduced to Doug, Tonya, Ariel, Philip, and Evan (with whom I sat for the show). David also showed up (to Tonya’s delight…hehe) and there was a spotting of Danny Tidwell, too. All the bloggers took a group picture, which we’re hoping will pop up here on The Winger soon!
It was so wonderful to meet everyone and discuss blogging, dance, the performance, etc. We bloggers are certainly a motley crew, haha. Check out other people’s coverage of the event: Tonya, Doug, Ariel, Evan, Philip, and Kristin.
While I was so excited after the evening, I didn’t get to write about it until now because the last two days have been insane: I started my internship at The New Yorker as well as a temporary apprenticeship with the Rebecca Kelly Ballet. Talk about busy! Both my “first days” have gone well…
I’ve gotten a lot of questions about my experiences at The New Yorker and more, so I wanted to announce that I also write another blog, Off Center, which chronicles more of my daily life of ballet classes, internships (ie: New Yorker), writing assignments, and more. I’ve had it for a few months now but have kept it pretty quiet - but I think now that so much more is going on I want to invite more people to read it! So check it out if you’re interested!:-)
Anyways…BIG THANKS to Cedar Lake for inviting the dance bloggers! It was such a fabulous night!
More updates on dancing with Rebecca Kelly Ballet and more to come soon…meanwhile, check out Off Center. Countdown: 2 weeks til I graduate from Marymount Manhattan College
