SYREN Audition

SYREN held its first open call last month at City Center. It was alot of fun, we taught phrasework from “Abravanel” and “Dig” as well leading some improvisation. Lynn and I met a TON of really talented dancers. We were blown away by ther talent and joked about how we need to start making work for 100 people!

As it stands, we only needed five! After quite the week of auditions and callbacks, we hired the lovely and talented Aleyse Bradford, Heidi D’Alessandro, Chanelle Lagacé, Brigitte Mitchell, and the very handsome Quincy Junor.

We are really excited to get back into the studio! The first thing on the calendar is the Dancenow NYC festival. We are performing excerpts of “Dig” at DTW, so the company will be back in the studio beginning in September. That gives Lynn and I some more time to keep going with these grant deadlines and foundation proposals. Its a tough nut to crack… funding from the city and state. But with the help of some outstanding feedback from a few different sources, we are hoping that this is the year we break though a bit more from a grant perspective.

We are thrilled to begin our residency next month awarded by DTW. The Outer Space Grant allows us to rehearse in Long Island City’s beautiful Greenspace studio for a generous number of hours for free. WAHOO!!!

Pentacle also approached us recently about representation in their Gallery, which is really great for the company. More visibility and more possibility…

One step at a time.. For the moment we are just thrilled with the new talented dancers on board for the journey!

Dressing Room

Thanks to budding photographer Matt Murphy, some shots were caught as I cooled down after a puffy Ballo della Regina, this weekend. Due to injury, I filled in for two extra shows of this ballet, which gave me six ballets to dance in two days, matinee and evening performances. It was an unusual circumstance but one I took with a strong mind set that I could get through it. And I did, and now I’m home HURTING but well worth it…

Notice the shot under this, Matt shooting away in the back ground.

Inside 890: “From Here On Out”

It’s not much of an assumption to state that one of the most anticipated moments of the fall dance season is the world premiere of Benjamin Millipied’s new ballet “From Here On Out,” it’s just fact. Millipied has been a strong choreographic presence over the past few years, in addition to his phenomenal career as a principal at NYCB, but this marks the first time he has choreographed on ABT.

I was fortunate to take a peek at some of his rehearsals and got EXTREMELY snap happy with my camera. I took tons of pictures, but I’d like to share the first round of the full ballet (after yesterday’s sneak peek at Pik and Blaine’s duet) because tonight is the premiere! Don’t worry though, if you miss it tonight, there’s still several chances to catch it this season. Pick up your tickets today!

(Benjamin takes a minute to discuss music before the run gets under way.)

(Isabella Boylston takes a moment to search through her bag of secrets before rehearsal.)

(Hee Seo rocks some dancer fashion.)

(Before she takes off the sweater and gets down to business.)

(Benjamin gives some notes after a run through.)

(The cast prepares for the opening moments of the ballet.)

(A flying entrance.)

(Maria Ricetto demonstrates her flexibility.)

(Simone Messmer and Thom Forster demonstrating some flexibility.)

(Once he got off the floor, it was time for him to let the ladies do the work.)

(Sascha and Jackie prepare in the “wings.”)

(Simone and Pik strike it fierce.)

(Marcelo wants to know if you’ll be coming to the premiere tonight?!)

Great Job Chris and Morphoses

So it started with Chris casually addressing the audience and letting people know what they will be seeing (him giving the dancers some corrections on the piece - Mesmerics with music by Philip Glass- then a run through of the whole piece with rehearsal dress but proper sets and lights).

This format works absolutely perfect with Chris because he is so well spoken, especially funny/witty, and knows exactly what he wants in a rehearsal.

For me, this was pretty much the experience a dancer has when they are understudying a piece, so it kind of felt like I should be memorizing the steps and taking mental notes. It was neat to see that Chris was exactly himself as if it were a regular rehearsal, and just happened to be letting the audience in on it all, in a casual way.

Now that the “performance” is done (everyone was fantastic), he let the dancers go and is now giving a great question and answer session.
The orchestra is completely full and it sounds like there are lots of people in the balcony as well.

Go Morphoses!

Morphoses Open House

In case you missed the announcement, Christopher Wheeldon’s new company Morphoses is giving an open house of sorts in the midst of the company’s New York debut/City Center run. It’s a 4PM event and you could just walk right up and they handed you a ticket with seat assignment to walk right in.

Not the mad house I had expected (I’m sure the rain and time of day had a lot to do with that) and it looks like a fairly standard ballet audience as of now, but its early. I have no idea what’s in store for the “show” but so far the curtain remains up while the stage crew is getting ready. The back of the stage is elevated a few feet, with a row of chairs on the platform.

Season preview

There is one week left for the opening of American Ballet Theatre’s season at City Center. As I thought I would give you an over view of the ballets I will be dancing in the up coming two weeks. It has been a grueling rehearsal period, like always, but an interesting one including learning new ballets (Benjamin Millepied) to refreshing old ones that I danced some three years ago.

From Here on Out

If you haven’t heard or seen press about this ballet yet then… where have you been! There was a featured article in New York magazine this week on Nico Mhuly, the composer, and then an article about Benjamin Millepied, the choreographer, in Time Out.. It should prove to be a filled evening of anticipation due to this collaboration, so be sure to check it out.

Fancy Free

I touched on this ballet four years ago and performed it at the Kennedy Center but then put it back in the archives for other ballets I was to dance. It is a gem and Jerome Robbin’s first ballet, choreographed for ABT. The three sailors are so much fun to portray, including playing around with the girls in the bar scenes. Its interesting revisiting a ballet that you have put away for so long, old thoughts come into your memory but also making room for new interpretations.

These are just a couple ballets danced by me during the season. Hope you can make it!
