Atlanta Ballet recently performed in Athens, Georgia, at the campus of the University of Georgia, and offered a mixed repertory performance including Balanchine’s Serenade, and Diane Coburn-Bruning’s Ramblin’ Suite.

After a very short post-Nutcracker lull, the Atlanta Ballet is back with an exciting and beautiful production of Romeo and Juliet, choreographed by Milwaukee Ballet director, Michael Pink. The show opens tonight at the Fox Theater, February 7th, and runs through February 16th, with 9 performances. Come check it out!

Today was Super Tuesday, and about half the states in the country held primary elections. I think voting is so much fun, and the way the news covers the returns is always so dramatic and entertaining. I hope everyone voted!

I was just sitting on my couch watching television, and I heard some commotion coming from the street. I thought that maybe it was the culmination of a soccer game that was being watched at one of the neighborhood sports bars (which is occasionally the case). However, I walked outside to find a migrating group of Santas ho-ho-ho-ing through the neighborhood. I waved, snapped photos, was given presents, and even asked to join the journey. Unsure of where these look-alikes might take me, I politely declined the offer. How strange and fun!

Stopping to mug for the shot.

See you next year!

Fellow blogger Arjan, who has a music blog called arjanwrites.com (go check it out!), told me that I should include more photos of myself in my posts. I thought about it, and decided that he was right.

My answer to this suggestion: find the photo in which I wear a costume that makes me almost completely unidentifiable! Here I am leaping through the battle scene as a rat.
Enough joking around. Below are some photographs from Atlanta Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker (choreography by John McFall).

We’re only halfway through our Nutcracker run, so there’s at least one more Nuts post to come!

Nutcracker season is in full swing here at Atlanta Ballet. We opened this past weekend, and still have 30 performances remaining. While this dizzying Nutcracker run keeps everyone busy, we are simultaneously in rehearsals for big, the collaboration between resident choreographer Lauri Stallings, Antwan ‘Big Boi’ Patton, members of his Purple Ribbon Entertainment, and the dancers of Atlanta Ballet. Simultaneously experiencing the whimsical, almost universally familiar world of the Nutcracker and the largely unknown and unpredictable world of big will be challenging. However, the Nutcracker can become monotonous, and the opportunity to work on this exciting new work is a welcome departure from the annual holiday classic.
Here are some photos from the rehearsals of a section called Wings. The female dancer is suspended in the air, while the man partners her from below. Lauri Stallings had just a few days of rehearsal to create this section of the ballet, since a theater in which harnesses and other equipment needed to “fly” dancers was needed.

Brian Wallenberg and Christian Clark prepare for rehearsal. The gloves are for their protection when partnering the dancer who is suspended.

I love this picture of Christian and Nadia. They are two amazing artists, and have a way of exploring and exposing the emotional side of movement. It’s beautiful to see.

This photo is cool. I love how the flying creates a dynamic in which the man can so easily manipulate the woman, yet the power of the woman’s weight while suspended in the air can become so great as a result of this manipulation.
