Valerie Robin and ensemble in the 1st song.
Joffrey is currently performing a trio of ballets by Anthony Tudor at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago; celebrating the centennial of Tudor’s birth. Our winter season opened February 20th and runs through March 2nd. The middle ballet on the program is Dark Elegies, a personal favorite of mine. Set to Gustav Mahler’s ‘’Kindertotenlieder'’ ('’Songs on the Death of Children'’), which are sung by Stephen Salters, the ballet depicts a community in mourning. Yet the nature of the disaster that has struck remains unspecified and one is free to speculate and imagine all sorts of catastrophes. The texts of the songs concern the deaths of children, cradling gestures recur and the dancers resemble devastated parents. It is such a powerful piece with so many opportunities to interpret and reflect upon one’s own life experiences. It is such a joy to watch my fellow peers bring an equal amount of skill and emotion to their dancing. As a dancer, it’s also an amazing experience to have live accompaniment on stage - whether it be vocal or instrumental.

1st song.

Stephen Salters and dancer Heather Aagard kneeling.

Victoria Jaini and Michel Levine in the 2nd song.

Erica Lynette Edwards in the 4th song.

As some of you may already know, Cedar Lake Dance Company was generous in inviting New York dance bloggers to attend a dress rehearsal last week for their current Winter Season, which runs through January 19th.
They invited everyone a bit early, which gave us a chance for a wine-and-cheese-accompanied mingle before the performance.

Sloan, Dave, and David.
We invited all our New York Winger contributors (many of whom were able to come!), and also brought along the talented Mr. Dave Franzese, an artist/designer/writer who saw Cedar Lake last season (I couldn’t attend and Doug invited him in my place) and became a fan.
He works for thehappycorp and writes for LVHRD’s blog, so look for an entry about CL over there soon as well.
I think it’s great that Cedar Lake has welcomed dance bloggers in such a unique way, but I also wonder… maybe next time, they might also think about inviting more writers from cultural/arts blogs. They most likely get more traffic than traditional dance blogs, have a more diverse audience that may not initially think they would like dance but could be open to it, and the writers would probably not be writing formal dance reviews - meaning that the casual non-dance-fanatic reader would be able to connect with what they were writing about (design, overall artistry, space, audience, etc) easier than a discussion about choreographic composition and dance technique (which has it’s place and purpose as well, but may not be as digestible for someone who doesn’t see a lot of dance or read a lot of reviews).

A good turn out…

Before the show started, Swan (the short name for their Artistic Director Benoit-Swan Pouffer) came to the front of the audience and welcomed everyone. While the show-slash-dress-rehearsal was also for friends and family of CL, he also took a moment to thank the bloggers for coming. Afterwards he was generous in holding a little Q&A with us.
More soon, when I get the photos from Doug’s trusty D200 [photos above by him as well]…

It was a particularly ugly dress rehearsal! All kinds of problems and some very nervous dancers. Parts of the show play out on the orchestra pit-and I think when everyone realized they would be that close to the audience. But we lived up to the “bad dress-good show” myth.

Hi, I took these pictures in the first Bayadere dress rehearsal on the stage, I hope you enjoy.

The Shades, this is a very hard scene for the girls, but they are all so beautiful.

I like this color.

Here is Monserrat, I was on the stage before second Act, and I saw Monserrat behind this painted curtain.

Ballerinas.

Monserrat, but this was the second dress rehearsal, and I was in the same place waiting to take this picture.

Ballerinas two.

Our costume designer, Amanda Waal, flew in to fit us today before dress rehearsal of The Lucy Poems. They are very cool corsets woven from men’s shirts and underneath is a LOLAstretch Sheer Power leo, courtesy of moi.
We did a cue to cue and then a full dress and we all left feeling good. I hope to see you all there this weekend! (Please introduce yourself after if you come, I would love to meet you!)

Amy Brandt being fitted by Amanda.

Me being fitted. Yes, I now have a bit of a faux hawk:-)

And last but certainly not least, Miss Elizabeth Brown contemplates the corset.
