NYCBers, doing exciting things

Recently, two of my peers (current and former, respectively) at New York City Ballet, have launched wonderful new things into the world, driven by their love for dance and desire to share it.

Kyle Froman, who has been shooting photos backstage at NYCB for a number of years, has just published a book called In The Wings. Not only does it have photos from behind-the-scenes at NYCB, Kyle also orders the photos as they would appear over the course of a dancer’s day, and provides great text about that day to accompany the photos.

You can purchase his book from Amazon.com, or if you are in the NY-area, you can meet him at his book signing at the Lincoln Center Barnes & Noble on Nov. 25th.

Also, former NYCB-er Deanna McBrearty has taken her expertise as a dancer, and experience in dance-based workouts (she appeared in the New York City Ballet Workout DVDs and books, and is currently a fitness instructor) to bring the health benefits of dance to a broader audience.

She has started a new fitness regime called Balocity, which incorporates dance principles and techniques into her own new exercise program. She teaches her program at the Trump buildings on the Upper West Side of New York City, and has just released a DVD. There is an informative website for Balocity, rich with video and information about both the program and Deanna herself, and she is currently exploring distribution possibilities.

Way to go Kyle and Deanna!

Injury Update

sloan_thumb USA_flag Posted by Sloan

The latest news, from the infinite Ball Room at West Side Dance Physical Therapy…

Since starting over with a new PT in January, things were looking good. Even though our new approach was almost like taking a step back, doing concentrated exercises retraining smaller but very important muscles around my hip joint which had shut down, (instead of bigger exercises or dance class which had hurt too much) I was starting to feel better, and more confident that I could start taking ballet classes again soon.

But the way these things generally go, is that you can’t take steps forward without eventually taking a step back. The past week and a half has been a bit more frustrating than usual, with the distinct pain inside my joint presenting itself once again. But again, this is par for the course, and I just need to keep concentrating on my exercises and alignment and not get down about it, so that I can continue past this bump in the road.

The hardest part is missing dancing so much, but not being able to do anything about it. Two PT appointments, and one acupuncture appointment a week, plus a daily muscle retraining routine has been all I can do, lest I cross that line between building strength and aggravating the injury.

Fortunately, I’ve been able to stay connected with the company in a few outside ways, one of which is speaking again for a patrons group before the show tonight (this time it’s about what it’s like to make the transition from student to company member). I’ll let you know how it goes.
