After many years of Serge Gainsbourg making Repetto jazz shoes cool, followed by his daughter Charlotte… the New York Times has picked up on the current trend and published an article this morning…
“UNBEKNOWN to many, Serge Gainsbourg, the seminal French singer and style icon, had sensitive feet. Boots hurt him. He hated walking. His only salvation was calfskin jazz shoes made by Repetto, the French dance shoe company. Jane Birkin, then his lover, turned him on to the supple shoes in the early ’70s. “Serge was looking for gloves for his feet,” she told Les Inrockuptibles, the French music magazine. Originally designed by Rose Repetto for her daughter-in-law, the ballet dancer Zizi Jeanmaire, the lace-up shoes served Gainsbourg well. ”
Gloves for the feet. Hmmm. Sounds like how my old ballet teachers used to describe how pointe shoes should feel. Probably not the same feeling Serge had in mind though.
They also include a little slideshow, (with a projected backdrop of images of Paris), showing all the new takes on the classic shoe available at design-y stores like Comme Des Garçons and Opening Ceremony.

Hello Wingers.
Sorry this is a few days overdue (been a bit sicky this weekend), but I’d like to introduce you to Candice Thompson, a new contributor with a fun range of abilities and interests.
After studying at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and dancing with the Milwaukee Ballet, Candice is now a member of the Ad Hoc Ballet and is also the owner and designer of a dancewear line called LOLAstretch. In addition to her dance and fashion talents, she’s also a prolific costume designer, and teaches at the Creative Arts Studio in Brooklyn, New York. You can read more about her in her profile, and check out her work in the links above.
Welcome Candice!

Hi. My name is Evan. I am a bun-head. No denial.
…I have tried to be less-bunheady and I have millions of other hobbies but still, put a hard2find vintage dance vid infront of me and I become kind of a sucker…
…which is why I, ummmm, shamelessly troll through youTube.com when I get a chance. (am I the only one?..) It would be literally impossible to gather all of the golden gems (legal or not…) that the mega-site has to offer.
I found this random clip of the old Frankfurt Ballet having fun doing some Stephen Galloway choreography for an Issey Miyake show in the early 90’s (?)…. I know a few of the dancers(§$%&ing fantastic still..) and it’s so cool to see them rocking out! I love this time when Frankfurt Ballet wasn’t just on-the-map, it kind-of WAS the map! Because so many artists were so inspired by the Forsythe brand of movement from that period, there has been alot of similar stuff being produced all over the world ever since. Infact, I think we’ve sort of come full circle now in Europe…where old is new is old is new is….yeah so either way, I wish I coulda been there at that moment! I mean, I was like 8 but whatev!…

hmmmm maybe we should have a vintage youTube(or whatever tube your watching) week where everybody posts a rare clip that they’re kinda fond of for whatever reason….!!! (nice sentence-structure, thx)
sound fun?? yes? ok!
:)

For those of you who live in New York, LVHRD’s FSHNDL III event is happening tomorrow night.
From lvhrd.org…
“Two fashion designers will go head-to-head in a design competition by creating outfits on live models in front of an audience. Each designer will be given equal materials, tools and one hour to create their outfits. A judging panel of industry professionals will select the winning wardrobe.”
This is always an amazing time! The fashion duel itself is always a spectacle, and the crowd is full of intriguing people. View the video of last year’s event here.
And for those of you not in New York, LVHRD just released the first issue of their interactive PDF MGZN. Available for download here.
Maybe I’ll see you tomorrow night!

So I’ve gotten a couple emails asking about Doug’s T-shirt designs so I thought I’d let everyone know all at once!
I’m happy to say that after learning a little about html emails in order to send out the most recent Winger newsletter, I was able to lend my services to Doug for his Design shop Dooker.com. (Under his superb art direction of course). Check it out.
“dooker.com started as an art project, a collaboration between doug jaeger and johnny vulkan, in 2001. we tried to design t-shirts that would go beyond pretty pictures and application technique, and begin to define what’s happening around us through the images we choose to wear. ”
Dooker designs are about reflecting America’s Brand in the context of it’s actions. Truthful, thought provoking, and well designed. A limited number of each design is created to “retain individuality, while committing to a unique expression.”
