The Arts & Music section of today’s Los Angeles Times takes a look at the growing popularity of Internet publicity among dancers and dance companies.

The YouTube video that seems to have prompted the article:

The connection between the video above and the rest of the article is, to me, a little fuzzy. Overall, though, the article is pretty neat. Especially cool is that Looseleaf recognizes certain notables, including Daniil Simkin, Rolando Sarabia, Anaheim Ballet, Grover Dale’s Answers4Dancers and, of course, New York City Ballet’s website and YouTube channel. (Congrats, Kristin!)

The full text of the article follows below for anyone who might be interested. Take a read!

My favourite quote: Asked what company co-founder and choreographer George Balanchine would have thought about the Internet, [NYCB’s General Manager Ken] Tabachnick replies, “He was an innovator. Balanchine loved change and didn’t shy away from new things. I imagine he would have loved it.”

Since Benny wrote about the serious and world-changing effects of Facebook - which was really interesting to see - I thought it might be fun to lighten it up with this video from our friends at College Humor. Go funlap!

Amazing 1995 video about the internet. It’s funny to look back.
Wish I had some home video of trying to slog through Prodigy - at a blazing 14.4 kbps. I think we got it in 93 maybe? (my parents were/are awesome in supporting my tech interests as much as they could) I remember not being sure what to do with it besides weather, really slow loading news articles, and trying to play games, where it would take like 3 minutes for each screen of the game to load. There was the promise of using it for research for homework and book reports - the entire encyclopedia at your fingertips! - but I don’t remember that working all that well until AOL and higher connection speeds came along.

I spend loads of money on music… but it can be difficult to keep all the music you want together, organized, transportable and fully charged. (I’ve already hit my max of 5 authorized computers for my music, and as far as I know, you can only attach an iphone or ipod to receive songs from ONE computer). This is a great solution for good, quick music (which you probably already own) on the go. Sorry UK, hope they work out licensing soon…
