Photo by Mark Miller from last week’s LVHRD ARCHDL IV where we were supposed to dress as lumberjacks or wildlife creatures….
Shorter in the back than it is in the front. Looks pretty Katie Holmes-esque here, but I’m trying hard to style it a little differently. Who knows, maybe the blonde chunks will make an appearance again, although I tend to think not.
You may remember me talking about Doug’s semi-secret creative members club LVHRD (pronouced LIVE HARD) before. It’s the one where they throw events where architects battle to create models live on stage, fashion designers compete to create the best dress in an hour, and for the past two years, individuals have battled for the title of Dance Champion.
The first year of LVHRD’s DNCHRD (pronounced DANCE HARD) featured the wonderful Mr. David Hallberg as a judge. Last year, both Gia and I had the opportunity to see and comment on the competition from a front-row judge’s seat as well. This year, the format is entirely different….
“Three DJ’s go head to head in a round robin tournament where you provide the vynl. Awards for best dance crew will be up for grabs, so bring your favorite record and be ready to dance your ass off.”
The main event is on Tuesday SEPT. 25TH (also Doug’s bday), but TONIGHT at an East Village bar called B-Side, there wil be a Pre-Party, where you can meet the competing DJ’s. Also, if you bring some vintage vinyl tonight to the official Pre-Party, you will be granted free admission to the main event on the 25th.
I’ll be there tonight, and next Tuesday.
I’ve already got my vinyl - Doug E Fresh - in honor of you know who.
This past August, as some of you may remember, thewinger.com helped hold auditions for LVHRD’s (live hard without the vowels) Battle of the Moves II dance competition. Once the auditions were over and the contestants were chosen, it was time for the actual event, which was held on August 29th in a private loft space in the Flatiron District of Manhattan.
LVHRD has just released the first segment of their video documentation of the auditions and of the actual event, which Gia Kourlas, Tracy Inman, Chris Chris and I judged. (I’m dressed as Cleopatra because we were supposed to come dressed as our favorite dance move - i.e. “walk like an egyptian”). So enjoy the first segment of video, and keep your eyes peeled for the second.
In the mean time, LVHRD is holding another battle/event called the Architect’s Duel III tomorrow Jan. 23rd at 8PM. In this event, two competing architects are given a brief moments before they begin building models in front of a live audience. The two teams cannot see each other during the process and the audience votes on the best model.
This year, it is an all female battle between the architecture firms of Balmori Associates and Field Operations.
True to LVHRD style, the venue is not revealed until the day of the event, when you receive a text message communicating the exact location. But in order to get that precious message, you must visit the LVHRD site to register and purchase tickets.
This post is a bit outdated, but I wanted to get it up because
1. it was such a cool event, and
2. i finally got to meet another dance blogger, the amazingly talented Mr. Matt Murphy of Ranting Details.
The event at which we met was LVHRD’s second BiFold event entitled WLD STRT, with Brahma-supported Brazilian graffitti artist Speto, and James and Evan of the Graffiti Research Lab. Speto discussed his work and influences after creating the piece above in front of the audience.
GRL then gave a presentation of their work with lots of video, followed by live graffiti on the street below the venue…really.
GRL is the organization responsible for inventing LED throwies. They then graduated to “Night writing” (click that link for an awesome GRL video), using the same LED technology. This is the graffiti technique they used that night.
There was a video camera shooting the action outside, which was projected in the space for those who could not see out the window. GRL was also hooked up to audio, so everyone in the room felt like we were down on the street with him. He was successful. After that spectacle, all of the attendees were then given an LED throwie kit to make LED throwies of their own! Totally cool.
A YouTube video on LED throwies (originally done by GRL)…
The LEDs are taped to magnets, which makes it so that when you throw them onto something metal, they stick. I put them temporarily on my lapel. They are just so pretty… ugh how girly of me.
Speto (on the right) with our photographer friend who is also from Brazil, Leo Zacharias. Cathy…. have you seen any of Speto’s work? He is also from Sao Paulo
The event left me feeling like I wanted to go paint something, and decorate everything with lights at the same time. How fun is that?!

Tonight Doug’s organization, LVHRD, is holding an event at the MoMA where they’re taking away your cell phone, and putting on a rock concert by Les Savy Fav…
They had to build these walls which will go inside the MoMA, (you’ll see picutres of what they’re for after tonight), so they did the contruction, with planning and help from my dad and mom at my parents place in Brooklyn.
I can’t wait for the event tonight, and I would tell you guys how to get tickets except it’s already sold out! …I did list it in the newsletter though
(By the way, we shaved Doug’s head for an art piece. Maybe I’ll put some pictures of it up tomorrow.)
Since Evan was nice enough to show us his wheels…
Here are all our horses lined up outside my parents’ place.
Matt’s, mine, and Doug’s.
My horsey made it so much easier to take a break from the walls on Saturday, and go see ABT with Erica up at City Center.
It was a freezing cold day, so I stood by these nice radiators in the lobby while waiting for Erica.
It reminded me of being a little kid going to Boston Ballet at the Wang Center in Boston. Before they open the doors to the performance, there is this marble area that is open on one side to the outside where you wait. It’s freezing, but they have these great radiators that are placed in lines in front of the doors, so that everyone gets warm and in line at the same time.
Waiting for it all to start…
We saw Jorma Elo’s new piece, Glow Stop, as well as Lar Lubovitch’s Meadow.
I kind of felt like the Elo piece didn’t need the first section, and I always love how flowing and smooth Lar Lubovitch’s choreography is. Gillian and Marcelo were beautiful.
During the intermission, we spotted these in the lobby. Personally, I’m partial to costume designs by Karinska. The detail of her costumes combined with how well they read from the audience is incredible, but it’s always interesting to see costumes close up.
On Sunday, we took a little break to take a peak at the New York Marathon, which goes down Bedford Street, only a few blocks from my parents’ place.
This year, Lance Armstrong took a stab at it, finishing in just under three hours, and finishing under his goal of within an hour of the winner’s time. This is a photo of his pack, even though you can’t actually see him. He looked a little beefier than I had expected, but perhaps that was from a summer of partying with Matthew Mcconaughey? Just kidding. What an incredible athlete! I have such respect for anyone who takkles this race.
