Ballet Austin’s New Building!

Exciting things are happening at Ballet Austin right now that we can hardly contain ourselves! The opening of our new building, the Butler Dance Education Center is just around the corner, in fact our moving day is set for next week.

Here’s an artist rendering of what the new building will look like:

This project has been years in the making and has required the support of the entire Austin community and I think for a lot of us the day seemed like it would never come. Up until our move, Ballet Austin has been housed in an old converted Firehouse, a historic building that we’ve simply outgrown.

Here’s a photo of the women’s dressing room, notice there’s only one stall… the men’s dressing room is smaller and also has only one stall. There’s is only one other restroom in the building… these three restrooms have had to accomodate dancers, staff, academy and parents for years. As you can imagine, there’s always a line.

And the sign that graces each restroom (this is when you know it’s time for new plumbing)

Here’s a photo of the new Ballet Austin sign recently taken by Forrest Preece that you can find in his blog about the progress of our new home.

Some other highlights of our new building from Forrest’s blog:

The Joe R and Teresa Lozano Long Grand Foyer taken from the community board room upstairs

The AdlerLand Studio, I love these viewing windows!

And the Armstrong-Connelly Studio as the floor is being laid out.

Hope in sight

Probably because of my own current physical plight, all my senses have started taking an immediate fancy to anything and everything related to dance, joint and muscle injuries. Already, in the very little time I’ve been able to spend outside the office, out of my apartment and, most significantly, far from the doctor’s office, I’ve bumped into three gimps strangers on crutches, one cripple person in a boot brace (a.k.a. “walking cast” (for me, a very recent upgrade from the solid cast I was originally in)), and countless stories about past muscle strains, joint sprains and bones broken.

With that in mind and, in anticipation of (hopefully) permanent freedom from the medical devices and supports I’ve grown so accustomed to in the past two months, I’ve been researching local possibilities from whence I can receive my physical therapy. My searches so far have provided very few options for injured dancers.

Until today, that is.

Imagine my pleasant surprise when my Google search turned up an article from the Los Angeles Times announcing a “New center for ‘dance medicine.’” Turns out, just this past Monday, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, together with USC, opened a new facility specializing in dance medicine. To quote the LA Times: “The first of its kind in Los Angeles, the Cedars-Sinai/USC Dance Medicine Center will offer comprehensive injury treatment, rehabilitation and preventive care tailored to professional and recreational dancers.”

I’ve linked the article for your reading pleasure. In about a month’s time I am hoping to pay them a visit…

…on both my feet!

Elena Tentschikowa as ‘Klara’ in Marco Goecke’s ‘’Der NUSSKNACKER'’ which just premiered on Saturday. (see my previous post..)

Marco took E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story apart and put it back together…and its magic.

Hope everybody is enjoying/surviving their respective Nuts…

Nutz at Lincoln Center

New York is never more beautiful than at Christmastime…. even when it’s 60 degrees!
The Lincoln center tree:

During my visit to the Nutcracker- I had the pleasure of meeting our own “Miss Winger” herself! I got to run back during intermission since Kristin is only doing party scene- she had to wait for me to say hi to get to go home!

This also fulfilled a childhood dream of being backstage during a NYCB Nutcracker performance- and seeing some of the dancers in costume warming up.
I hadn’t been to NYCB’s Nut in over 15 years!

On the way home, I had to try to snap a picture of the Time Warner Center’s light show- which is fast becoming one of my favorite NY Christmas sights/sounds. The huge lights/stars change colors in time with christmas music. It’s really spectacular, and quite hypnotic. :-)

I’m getting my fill of NY Christmas, because I leave on Sunday for Sunny California to start Camelot rehearsals. I’ve never been away from home on Christmas- and being in warm weather will just seem so wrong!

Happy Holidays everyone!
