Thursday night we got to check out Doug Aitken’s Sleepwalkers and attend the opening night party in the lobby and mezzanine area of the MoMA (thanks Daniel!).

The West wall - the building is alive!

One of the projectors.
Unfortunately it happened to be one of the coldest nights this winter - not exactly the best scenario in which to view an outdoor art piece. Nevertheless, the scene in the sculpture garden was stunning and the characters were interesting to watch. (I’ve always been fascinated with Tilda Swinton).

Tilda’s giant arm.

Doug, with Charles Renfro’s back of head, in the sculpture garden.

Me freezing, in line for the party, with Doug’s jacket - he’s the best.
At 10PM the projections stopped and it was time for the party. It was completely packed!

But luckily we were upstairs by the “Out of Time” exhibit, which they eventually opened up to make more room for everybody. We missed the music performance by Seu Jorge which was downstairs, but we were having fun checking out things like the Bill Viola piece and the art made by the residue from the 2002 fireworks celebrating MoMA’s new digs in Queens.

This post is a bit outdated, but I wanted to get it up because
1. it was such a cool event, and
2. i finally got to meet another dance blogger, the amazingly talented Mr. Matt Murphy of Ranting Details.
The event at which we met was LVHRD’s second BiFold event entitled WLD STRT, with Brahma-supported Brazilian graffitti artist Speto, and James and Evan of the Graffiti Research Lab. Speto discussed his work and influences after creating the piece above in front of the audience.

GRL then gave a presentation of their work with lots of video, followed by live graffiti on the street below the venue…really.
GRL is the organization responsible for inventing LED throwies. They then graduated to “Night writing” (click that link for an awesome GRL video), using the same LED technology. This is the graffiti technique they used that night.

There was a video camera shooting the action outside, which was projected in the space for those who could not see out the window. GRL was also hooked up to audio, so everyone in the room felt like we were down on the street with him. He was successful. After that spectacle, all of the attendees were then given an LED throwie kit to make LED throwies of their own! Totally cool.

A YouTube video on LED throwies (originally done by GRL)…
The LEDs are taped to magnets, which makes it so that when you throw them onto something metal, they stick. I put them temporarily on my lapel. They are just so pretty… ugh how girly of me.

Speto (on the right) with our photographer friend who is also from Brazil, Leo Zacharias. Cathy…. have you seen any of Speto’s work? He is also from Sao Paulo
The event left me feeling like I wanted to go paint something, and decorate everything with lights at the same time. How fun is that?!

Ok, so I blew it last Saturday and didn’t make it to Agora II (the site specific dance performance/social experiment by Noémie Lafrance) as I had hoped and posted about before, (rain, friends birthday parties… excuses, excuses).
Anyhow, it seems to have worked out ok, because this is the last week (09.27-10.01) that Agora II will be at McCarren Park Pool and on Friday they are going all out! They’ve invited Critical Mass to join in the form of 500 bicycles riding through the performance, and there will be a huge dance party after the show!
Note that when buying tickets to the show you have the option of being a either a Viewer or a Player.
From my understanding, people that opt to be Players are allowed into the pool at certain points during the performance and given some basic choreography to do within the show.
The good news is that The Winger has been granted PRESS access.
I’ll be there on FRIDAY, shooting the performance as a “Player” with my hands-free Samsung Sportscam (It’s inaugural outing).
Also, readers of The Winger get a 25% discount on tickets!
Enter Code: POOL at checkout.
And if you’ve already seen Agora II this year, you can bring your program and ticket stub on Friday to get $10 tickets to the show and party.
So, between the discount, and the fact that I’ll be there shooting…
How about getting a team of Wingers out on FRIDAY night for the performance and the party?
Whether you want to be a Player or Viewer, we can all congregate afterwards at the party. Drop me a line so that I know to look out for you.
C’mon. It’ll be fun!

At the Good Magazine party last week (which included the infamous Al run-in I posted about earlier), there was a photographer taking these shots, which were the same as the cover on their first issue, only you could write in your own title with a dry-erase marker. Kinda cute.
I wonder how Al’s came out…

Last night we went to the “Designism” event at the Art Directors Club. There was a panel of world-renowned designers including Milton Glaser and George Louis, as well as some great commentary by Tony Hendra, author of “The Messiah of Morris Avenue” (from how they explained it it sounds like an interesting book).
We were trying to figure out why he looked so familiar, and then it was revealed that he also appeared as the band manager in the movie Spinal Tap. (When they intorduced him they told him they would turn the speakers up to 11).

Because Doug is a board member of the Art Directors Club (crazy right?!), we got the best (front row) seats in the house.

Before the event began I had the honor of meeting and speaking with Milton Glaser (known for, among many other things, designing the I (heart) NY logo). Doug knows him personally because he has been working with him on the Brooklyn Brewery account.
While chatting with him he mentioned that his main connection to the dance world was that he used to live in the same building as Balanchine. He says he spoke to him sometimes in the elevator. I’m so surprized we never ended up with some Milton Glaser designs for NYCB!

Me and Milty (as Doug likes to call him).

The panel had some great things to say and showed some interesting work. The whole purpose of the event was to encourage designers to use their creative talent to invoke social change. Hmm, I think I know someone that’s doing that right now.
One of the things that stuck out to me was Milton’s concept of Purple - the idea that red and blue make purple (we’re talking politics here). “Truth not Spin, Patriotism not Partisanship, Principles not Politics, Facts not Fear…”

Afterwards we headed to the launch party for Good Magazine, which was held in a crazy two floor space on 21st Street and the West Side Highway filled with art and interesting people. Subscription to the magazine costs $20, but that whole $20 is donated to the charity of your choice (they have like 9 to choose from). Cool huh?

Above, Erin and Jen check out the goat art, then Jen check’s out the tree made of pushpins and green buttons.

Sasha, co-founder of Flavorpill.net, mans the turntables on the lower level.

Above, the Brazilian Girls set up. Right, Doug stands in front of a wall made of books (while he still has a shirt on).
So, not sure if many of you checked it out from my earlier post, but Doug and I recently worked on putting together a newsletter for his t-shirt company.
In it, we asked for people to help put us in touch with Al Gore, because we desperately wanted to send him one of Doug’s USA No. 1 Polluter shirts.
So we’re hanging out at the party, checking out the art and the people… and magically Mr. Al Gore himself appears before us!

It just so happened that Doug was wearing his USA No. 1 Polluter shirt that night, along with a zip-up hoody. So I say, “Doug… take your shirt off now and give it to Al.” And he did!

Above, the shirt of the hour. Right, a half-naked Dougie.
Thanks to Doug’s fearlessness and design talent, we now have the card for Al’s press agent so that we can send him his very own shiny new shirt. It’s funny, I was more excited and star-struck seeing Al Gore than any other celebrity I’ve seen. I kinda wanted to give him a big hug, but figured that was probably inappropriate and restrained myself. I doubt his body guards would have been amused.

Last Friday, as many of you may already know, The Winger, Tom Gold and thehappycorp global hosted a pre-party to help promote “New Ballet Choreographers“, an event held by the Miller Theater and Works and Process at the Guggenheim running through this Sunday at the Miller Theater.
The video footage I did of Tom’s rehearsal was projected outside on the wall of the building next door, and photos were taken by thehappycorp’s Erin Sparling.
Thanks to Tom and everyone who came out, to Erin for photographing the event, and a big thanks to thehappycorp for making the whole thing possible!
