Friends Make the World Go ‘Round

So it is now 2008 and time for the LOLAstretch 2008 calendar to make its appearance. I had a theme of sorts this year: Best Friends.

I am feeling a bit sentimental about all of my good friends that I have had thus far in my career and I wanted to dedicate it to them. In particular, Miss Dale Jordan who is my 2008 Cover Girl. I have been so lucky to have friends that have shown me this business of being a professional dancer and designer does not have to be competitive and cut-throat, but can instead be an environment where we challenge each other artistically and are there for each other emotionally.

OK enough of the sappy, here is the fun stuff, the outtakes you won’t see in the calendar, that I am going to try to use to tell the tale of two little girls grown up (sort of):

Dale and I back in 2000 at the crack of dawn, or at least it looks like it:-), on our way to Marshfield, WI for our first tour with MBII. The beginning.

Cut to 2008. Dale is in NY on break from Milwaukee Ballet, where she returned the year I left, after dancing with Eugene Ballet and Sarasota Ballet. We are getting ready for said photoshoot, going over some makeup ideas.

I think her look says it all. Candice is up to her antics again. Here we go.

But she obliges me and punches at the air in good humor. Trust is key–she knows I have silly ideas and I know she will look good executing them!

And I can’t help but love her sense of adventure. This photo shows Dale sliding down a curved wall in an attempt to oblige me yet again and I am trying to help, but we can’t stop laughing.

Slowly getting to a more reasonable shot. I am in the way again.

Friends don’t let friends have wedgies when they are balancing precariously on a stool.

Makeup round two. Part of this shoot was to showcase a new line of glitter makeup that will be available on my site! It was brought to my attention by a new friend…

Mr. Ian Grosh, this one’s for you!

I think we were laughing almost the entire time.

Special thanks to Mr. Steven Schreiber for putting up with us girls and capturing so beautifully the images of our playdate. Thanks also to Purespace (the lovely and modern site of this shoot), Frank Bevan, Dale Jordan and all of my friends who helped make this happen or who just inspire me daily with their being.
Happy New Year!

XO

Candice

Tuesday night we were asked to do a photo shoot for the South Magazine. They will be featuring our show in the Dec/Jan edition! Very exciting for everyone. The magazine is known for it’s beautiful photography and is sort of a hip view of our area. The photographer, Kevin Phillips, called me and asked if we could shoot in the Lucas Theatre’s lobby. Not too easy to arrange since the Savannah Film Festival is about to begin. But the always super nice Ken Carter (he runs the theatre) somehow magically made it happen. Jim the tech director there had this great idea to shoot on top of the marquis. I opted not to bring up the younger dancers. It was soooo scary when Emma climbed right up on the edge! It certainly caused a stir on the street in front of the theatre. We had a great time and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Sneak Peak at the coming RIBellion

candice_40 USA_flag Posted by Candice Thompson

A week ago we did our first LOLAstretch Design Lab photo shoot at the skate park under the Manhattan Bridge. The shoot featured the new leotard that Erica Sabatini has designed as part of the Design Lab project. Our models were dancers Margot Martin of Carolina Ballet, Andrew Scordato of NYCB, Jaime Benjamin from the reality tv series The Search For the Next Pussycat Doll, and Connor Weigand. Kari Sharff, our most excellent photographer, gracefully captured shots and helped us navigate the sometimes dangerous terrain in the middle of a bunch of serious skateboarders. Shane Cisneros, celebrity stylist extraordinaire and fashion specialist for Getty Images, styled and held my hand as usual.

Erica has appropriately named the new design RIBellious, as it features a boat neck top, flattering rib panels that can be solid, mesh or open and a super low back. I am really excited to be able to launch this style as I feel Erica did an excellent job of pushing the design envelope while staying within the LOLAstretch aesthetic. Check out our myspace page, LOLAstretch.com or keep coming back here for new images of the leotard, slideshows of the behind-the-scenes images from our shoot and promotions as the day of the RIBellious launch approaches(September 28th).

We have a goal of raising $2500 for LUNGevity, a not-for-profit cancer research organization, and I am certain that will be a piece of cake with this eye-catching design. Please direct any questions or comments you might have to erica@lolastretch.com. We would love your feedback!

Margot and Andrew

Jaime…..I think she actually knows how to skate

Me trying to fix the helmet on Margot as Andrew and Connor look on…….I was obsessed with getting this sort of break-dancing headstand/headspin shot and needless to say, it was a misguided at best:-) but I thank Margot and Connor for being good sports!

The rebellious dancer/designer, Erica, in all her glory. And yes, we did spray paint those t-shirts in a fit of what could only be described as divine inspiration.

Random guy from skate park….confused about how he mistakenly stumbled upon a bunch of ballerinas but happy nonetheless.

Group shot, sorta like a group hug. Everyone involved was amazing and I think you can surmise from my maniacal laughing that good times were had.

Location Scouting

candice_40 USA_flag Posted by Candice Thompson

We are on week 9 of the 12 week LOLA Design Lab project, so now Erica and I are scouting locations for the next LOLAstretch photo shoot that will feature her new leotard design. She proposed a skatepark theme and I couldn’t think of anything more LOLAstretch than that! So this morning we found ourselves under the Manhattan Bridge on the Manhattan side after getting a tip from a former pro-skateboarder.

What fun we are all about to have……..ballerinas and halfpipes…….next up is the scouting the park on 108 and Riverside.

Erica on the steps of the skatepark under the Manhattan Bridge.

View of some of the pipe rails etc. in the skatepark and maybe some potential extras?

Don’t forget to check out Erica’s blog on the whole design process.
