“Acts of Light” Book Signing

BIO | POSTS

On September 20th (during our Joyce theater season) there was a book signing for “Acts of Light” at the National Arts Club. It was my day off from the season so I attended this event.

The National Arts Club is an old social club and it is very quiet, traditional and beautiful.

This is the entrance facing Gramercy Park.

Inside of the Club, at the bar, I looked up above… and it is such a gorgeous ceiling…

This is the slide of the book, and I am the cover.

This is John Deane, the photographer of the book, speaking how he started to take pictures for the Graham company.

It was a lovely event..

It’s OK. I’m from Boston. I think that gives me liberty to poke a little fun at the accents ;)

I arrived in Boston tonight (Harvard Square to be exact) to teach for a few days at the summer program at José Mateo’s Ballet Theatre of Boston.

This is the ballet school I went to before coming to SAB. In fact, I participated in this exact summer program a few weeks before leaving for New York for my first year there. Back then the studios were on Mass Ave, but now they are in a beautiful church at Harvard Square. This is also where the company does there performances. It’s an incredible space. You’ll see it tomorrow!

Gary Sloan Studios | Boston

I drove in with my parents. My dad is a commercial photographer who works out of both New York and Boston. He has a big studio outside the city, so we stopped there first to drop a few things off before heading to dinner. This is only less than half of it! He also does a lot of the photography for Ballet Theatre of Boston.

We ate at Grafton Street. I had the cod. It was lovely.

Across the street from the restaurant was what looked like Harvard dorms. I love the engraving in the marble.

ENTER, TO GROW IN WISDOM

At my hotel they have actual pages from George Washington’s diary.

They even had a diorama entitled “Washington Takes Command” July 3, 1775, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
History is fun, especially in diorama form.

WING018 - Gerard Uferas | In the Company of Stars

WING018 | Gérard Uféras | In The Company of Stars

A few weeks ago, I stopped by the Hermés Gallery to talk to Gérard Uféras on the day that his exhibition, In The Company of Stars, opened. The photographs in the exhibit were taken behind-the-scenes at the Paris Opera Ballet over a two year period, and are part of an upcoming book of the same name.

I was really struck by how well he understood the feeling and emotions of the living environment within a dance company. These are beautifully intimate shots that are not staged and use no additional lighting. As he says, he learned to breathe with the dancers. I understood that to involve learning how the dancers move and react, and then trying to place yourself within their space and time to illuminate those moments with light and film. The backstage scene is also not new to Gérard. He has previously published books that capture the fashion and opera worlds from behind the curtain. (The Fabric of Dreams, Un fantome á l’Opéra, and L’Etoffe Des Reves.)

The exhibit will be open for one more week, until July 21st. The Hermés Gallery is located on the top floor of the Hermés flagship store on Madison Avenue at 65th St. (don’t worry, there is an elevator if you are afraid of being too tempted by the store items). I highly recommend stopping by!

Swan Lake in Irvine, CA

BIO | POSTS

About a month ago Casey Herd and I were invited to dance Swan Lake in Irving, CA. As some of you might recall Susan posted one picture she took in the wings during our first performance.

So yesterday I received some pictures from Ben Majors. Ben is a dancer and he, like so many of us, is recovering from a serious injury. So to keep himself busy and working he has decided to share with the world his other talent: taking photographs of dancers. Well his pictures are beautiful and by seeing them yesterday I got to relive my experience in California. This trip was special to me in so many ways.

In February Casey and I premiered in Swan Lake together. Dancing this ballet for the first time was for me more that just a physical challenge. It was also a spiritual and mental challenge. Since moving to Seattle I have discovered this dancer that had been tied up inside me for a couple of years. I have had the opportunity to dance all these roles that I had no idea I was capable of dancing anymore. And Swan Lake is just one of the ballets that have awakened this incredible strength and artistry in me. After a rigorous preparation and hours in the studio rehearsing with my Elaine Bauer and Peter Boal, Casey and I only got to perform the ballet two times. So coming to Irving to dance Odette/Odile with Festival Ballet Theater was a big gift to me. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to recreate what we had created back in February.

Another great thing about the trip was the people I met in Irving. Salwa Rizkalla founded Southland Ballet Academy in 1983 and in 1988 she started Festival Ballet Theater, a company where the dancers can inspire people and also be inspired by the many internationally known artists that Salwa brings to perform with them. Salwa was a great person to work with and we both felt very welcomed by her and her dancers. We also met Sayat Astryan, the most creative do it all person I have ever met!! And Ben, of course. And Dave Friedman, the company’s photographer and he is also a race car photographer. And it is always a pleasure meeting all the dancers and the people that come watch the shows.

Last but definitely not least. A beautiful part about the Winger family is that we artists get to learn about each other and eventually even meet each other. To be able to go to Irving, a place I have never been before, and have someone like Susan calling me wanting to meet with me felt welcoming and exciting. I absolutely loved meeting her. Even with the small amount of time I got to spend with her I could see that she is everything she appears to be at the Winger. Generous, passionate and always willing to help the dance world. I hope I can continue meeting my winger friends and also the people that so passionately read our posts every day.

I am glad I get to share these pictures with you and a little bit of my experience of dancing Swan Lake and being in this world.

My friend, Julia Hollas, takes gorgeous photos. She’s also a really fantastic dancer who’s recovering from knee surgery. And she’s working in arts administration… Basically, she’s an amazing person of many talents.

Here’s a photo Julia took of Melanie in a rehearsal with Alex:

And one of Hallie:

And here’s the link to her photos on flickr in case you want to take a look round. I’ve just discovered how deceptively addictive flickr is. Click click click. Endless photos to see… Wow, it might be worse than youtube.
