BIO | POSTS

It’s been a few days since I posted, and today’s post isn’t exactly the most exciting so forgive me. Even though this is just about a great new playlist (that’s perfect for warm-ups), the next posts I have coming up are going to be VERY exciting! I am just waiting on a few things before I can post them.

So if you’re in the mood for some great new music, check out the new “RANTING WINGER” iMix. Over the past five months of being sick, music has played a key role in brightening up my spirits. This playlist reflects the songs that help put a smile on my face at the moment. There’s a huge mix of artists, including M.I.A, Mika, Nellie Mckay, Patrick Watson, Rilo Kiley and many more! Check it out!

(Fellow corps dancer Blaine Hoven and I enjoy some music at Marcelo’s end of summer barbecue. It’s a battle of the sunglasses!)

From now on, each Winger Newsletter will contain ONE short QUESTION which we’ll ask all of the contributors.
For this past month’s newsletter (which went out on Halloween), Evan suggested we create a WARMUP PLAYLIST, with song recommendations from each contributor. (Thanks guys!)

Whether it’s before you start a dance class, before a performance, before a rehearsal, or just for fun, we hope you’ll enjoy our varied selections. As you can tell, some of us like to chill out, some of us like to be revved up… depends on the mood you’re in and the mood of what you’re about to dance! Here are the results… All artists are clickable.

This playlist is also available as a sport iMIX on iTunes.

1: WHERE IS MY MIND | the pixies
from tony schultz
“This song gets me focused by helping me slough off my empiricism, loosen my neck and drop my shoulders. The beginning is cool and it reminds me of that movie Fight Club. This will get you ready to rock out.”2: SATELLITE | dave matthews band
from cathy godeghesi
“I am a huge fan of their work, it’s really good music. This song puts me in a good mood, it’s calm and kind of happy at the same time… for some reason I don’t know, it reminds me of sunny days. It’s great for warming up.”

3: BOLERO | maurice ravel
4: HANDEL ARIAS | renee fleming
5: SLIDE | missy elliott
from david hallberg
“Ok so a song that I warm up to…. well there are a few…. One is Ravel’s Bolero… The building of the instruments really gets me in the mood for a taxing performance. Another is…. Renee Fleming’s Handel Arias… Such beauty in her voice and clarity. Calms me down…. If it’s more contemporary rep… I will put on a little Missy Elliot… her song Slide is the best… makes me think of the time we were doing a Forsythe ballet.

6: SOON | my bloody valentine
7: LITLLE FLUFFY CLOUDS | the orb
from kate bordwell
“I really like to warm up and stretch to music that puts me in a trance. I’ve loved these songs for ages, since I was 13 or 14. They started out just as tracks to chill out to, but since I’ve been dancing I can relax and stretch at the same time. Actually, relaxing is pretty key to the whole stretching process!”

8: VINCERO, PERDERO | mario frangoulis
from susan kim
“There are so many songs I like to warm up to, but I think this is one of my all-time favourites. I never really tried to understand the Spanish in the song, but I think, oddly enough, that part of the song’s appeal to me is that I don’t fully understand it… I just adore listening to Mario’s voice and the music is beautiful.”

9: I DON’T FEEL LIKE DANCIN’ | scissor sisters
from gwyneth muller
“Ironic title, I know! But this song about a man who doesn’t feel like dancing totally makes ME want to hit the dance floor (be it a ballet studio or otherwise). It’s fun, ridiculously over-the-top and completely addictive- just the thing to get your body moving!”

10: WAIT | get set go
from megan kurashige
“This is one song I like to warm up to…. hard choice! It’s a mellow song, nice and soothing, even though the lyrics are a bit sad.”

11: WHITE UNICORN | wolfmother
12: BLUE ORCHID | the white stripes
13: AKHNATEN: FUNERAL | philip glass
from kristin sloan
“I love classic rock, and one of the coolest things about Wolfmother is that their songs sound like your favorite classic rock bands collaborated on a new album. We saw these guys play at a Nylon Magazine party two years ago and have been fans ever since. This song builds in it’s special rock n roll way, making you feel like something really incredible is about to happen. Ready for some tendus now? The driving beat in Blue Orchid really gets you going, and once you’ve seen the video by Floria Sigismondi, you’ll picture those crazy beautiful images everytime you hear the song. I love that. Funeral From Akhnaten is from an opera by Philip Glass. You may also recognize it from the last movement of Jerome Robbins Glass Pieces. It’s one of the most fun things to dance!”

14: GIVE ME LOVE | cerrone
15: ACCELERATION WALTZ | johann strauss II
16: LOVE SENSATION| loleatta holloway
from evan mckie
Give Me Love starts slower but picks up quick so one doesn’t get stuck in that lazy middle split position….
Acceleration Waltz…. because it’s impossible to be in a grumpy mood with this waltz and the tempo is perfect for stomach exercises!!!! And Love Sensation… If you are having a REALLY bad morning and nothing is working out then this is your emergency track. Used only in severe cases because it’s soooo hot!”

17: BALANCA A PEMA | marisa monte
18: FROM 5TH TO 5TH | wilhelm burmann (full cd)
from carla korbes
“I must say that I am kind of dorky when it comes to my warm up…. I love listening to Wilhelm Burmann’s From 5th to 5th !!! I know… it’s just that it’s such good music and it’s so easy to get warm to, I just love it.
It makes me feel centered and warm and ready to perform.
I also love listening to any Brazilian songs like: I love Marisa Monte’s song Balanca a Pema. It reminds me of my roots and gives me energy. It has that Brazilian rhythm that makes you warm from the inside out!”

19: AERIAL | kate bush
from gia kourlas
“I’m still listening to Kate Bush’s Aerial like a crazy person. It would be
hard to pick one song because it’s a whole two-disc experience, and it
reminds me of Berlin because it’s so eerily quiet, peaceful.”
