That the dance community at large has been facing a number of worries is not really news to most of us. (’Tis unfortunate, but true.) For the most part, most of the concerns that dominate the dance headlines have been dollar-focused; the problem of finding consistent funds and finances to pay dancers, commission choreography, license works and underwrite productions is one that will likely (and, sadly) plague us for a while longer. (For those who have not yet heard, Boston Ballet is the most recent company to fall into the financial black hole.)

In order to get a better grasp of what the dance world is facing, it is probably a good idea to get a more distanced perspective of where and how dance stands in relation to its other cultural peers. Towards the end of last year (2007), LaPlaca Cohen published Culture Track 2007, a presentation in which they summarize the results of their fourth national survey of cultural audiences.

The good news: In the past two years, there’s been a slight (2-3%) increase in attendance at classical dance (ballet) and modern dance events. (Yay!)

The bad news: A hefty percentage (52-68%) of people indicated that the genre/period/style to which a “cultural activity” belonged affected their attendance. Might this mean that dance will continue to remain a “lesser attended art form”? (Bummer.)

The hope: A significant number (31-49%) of the surveyed respondents indicated that “supporting a friend or family member” is a “very important” factor in their decision to attend performances and ‘activities.’ We can make a difference! (Hurrah!)

And, just in case your invitations meet resistance, be prepared:

The entire study will be available online, with a front-end tool that will let you easily pull out the information you want by answering a few questions.

Smart!

[and while editing my mobile post, I can respond to Justin’s comment… Census will be available online, in its entirety, this summer.]

WING009 - New Dance Group

Woah…
Whiplash!
Two videos in one day!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting New Dance Group Arts Center at their new space on 8th Avenue and 38th Street in NYC and speaking with Jae McManus, their general director, on the month-one countdown to their grand opening.
NDG was originally started in 1932. It is a non-profit organization that is trying to foster creativity in dance and the performing arts.
They recently sold their former building near Time Square, and are now leasing a 21,000 square foot space that holds eleven studios… two of which are equipped for performance use, and some of which will have recording and multi-media capabilities in the near future.
I am so excited about this new space and what it will do for dance in New York, that I am doing my best to prevent NDG from staying New York’s best kept dance secret.
Their official opening day is September 15th, during which they are planning a ribbon cutting and free dance classes throughout the day, followed by a performance of the NDG company and a party in the evening.
Thank you Jae and Farrah for taking the time to share your space and ideas with The Winger!

I’ll be leaving Tuesday night to teach a summer intensive in Savannah, Georgia.
So… yesterday we took a trip up to the Capezio store at Times Square to purchase some teaching shoes.
Normally, I’d love to be able to teach in pointe shoes (or at least flat shoes), but because of my injury I’m going to try dance sneakers as a way of slowing me down and preventing me from trying to do too much! I never thought I’d have a use for these, and they sure do feel funny, so needless to say it took me some time to decide which ones would be suitable.
(sorry dougie!)

New Dance Group

While waiting for my drum teacher to let me in the building, I noticed that two floors of this gorgeous huge-windowed building at 38th and 8th Avenue will be the new home of New Dance Group. I believe their previous studios were right off Times Square. It looks like a beautiful space - maybe even nicer than Steps!?
