Many of my students go off to summer programs. This year I had kids at Chautauqua, the Rock School, ABT and Virginia School of the Arts.
I wanted to share some of their experiences with you all.
Alston, 10, went to Chautuaqua and the Rock School.
Here she is at Chautauqua with Patricia Mcbride:

Here’s some from her own post on TIM
“Amy Price was another one of our teachers. She choreographed our classical piece and our contemporary piece for the show at the end of the intensive. She was fun to have class with, but she still expected alot out of us.
This is a picture of Ms. Amy correcting me in pointe class.”

And here is Linzy and friend, also at Chautauqua. They both felt that is was a very special place to be.

Angela spent her second summer at Virginia School of the Arts.

I’m really proud of them they are all such special dancers and people. I have a few more to share with you in my next post.

Well it was quite a weekend at the Youth America Grand Prix regional in Spartanburg, SC! A who’s who of young talent. All of my kids did very well-I am so proud of them. It was very intimidating and a lot of pressure. I am really tired so here is a quick post on our results:
Alston Macgill (pre-competitive) came in Third place and was invited to the finals in NY in April!!
Shakira Bell (pre-competitive) and Angela Novelli (SR Contemporary) both finished in the top 12.
The scoring was very tight due to the unbelievable amount of talent in all categories. I am very pleased with how they all did. Justin in particular brought the audience to tears with his moving performance. He narrowly missed the top 12 by tenths of a point. They certainly learned a lot this weekend and had a great experience.
Here are a few photos:

We have been very busy at the STUDIO preparing for the Youth America Grand Prix regional in Spartanburg, SC! We are leaving in the morning and the dancers begin in the early evening. It has been quite a process for them all, the usual blood sweat and tears. I decided to take 8 dancers this year: Justin, Emma, Skye, Angela, Kieran, Linzy, Shakira and Alston. I am so proud of them all and excited to see them reach their personal goals. They are an incredible group of talented young dancers and people. It has been so nice to see them grow together-their support of each other is amazing.
Here are a few shots from our rehearsals. (photographs by the STUDIO’s unofficial, official photographer-Mary-Margaret Macgill)

Columbia City Ballet has been performing the Nutcracker in Savannah for about the past 18 years. Every year they audition local dance students and give them the opportunity to perform with the company. This year Alston was chosen to play Clara! What an incredible experience for her-the first of many I am sure! She gave a magical performance-just the way Clara should be played. She did some demanding choreography for a 10 year old-pulling off multiple turns and hops on pointe, like a pro. I am not used to not being backstage with her when she performs-so I snuck back there and helped her do her make-up and got her warmed up. She had been there since 10:30am she had come down with laryngitis and her feet hurt!
Getting some notes from William Starrett.

We went onstage for some last minute practice.

Isabel and Florrie were adorable mice and Karilena was a bon bon.

Looking very Clara-like

I hated having to go out to watch in the audience! But she was ready as always! It was nice to get to see them all perform from a different view! I was so proud of all of them!

Yay! Thanks to a couple of “gaurdian angels” I have finally been able to get a marley for the studio!

This comes at a great time since it is a only a couple of weeks until our show. My husband Mark and I built the floor ourselves when I opened the studio. We did a pretty nice job! It is sprung on cross-link foam and very easy on your legs. Every few weeks I would have to add 2 coats of polyurethane to keep it from getting too slippery. Kind of a pain! Anyway, something happened to it that we began to call “the virus”. It was like someone rolled on the floor with body oil or something-it would get on your shoes and appear in different places in the studio. It was alive and spreading everywhere! I had to re-coat the floor, but since we have been in the studio so much, it didn’t have time to dry by the next rehearsal-so we danced on it anyway-completely tearing it up. AND the virus was still there! The idea of staying on a Saturday (after being there for 8 hours) to sand it down and re-coat it was killing me! I can’t believe I was able to get the marley and so appreciative of the help I got to do it. A special thank you to my “angels”.

Tuesday night we were asked to do a photo shoot for the South Magazine. They will be featuring our show in the Dec/Jan edition! Very exciting for everyone. The magazine is known for it’s beautiful photography and is sort of a hip view of our area. The photographer, Kevin Phillips, called me and asked if we could shoot in the Lucas Theatre’s lobby. Not too easy to arrange since the Savannah Film Festival is about to begin. But the always super nice Ken Carter (he runs the theatre) somehow magically made it happen. Jim the tech director there had this great idea to shoot on top of the marquis. I opted not to bring up the younger dancers. It was soooo scary when Emma climbed right up on the edge! It certainly caused a stir on the street in front of the theatre. We had a great time and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
