Free Web Advice this Monday at the Joyce SOHO

This Monday I’ll be joining our friends Doug Fox, Jaki Levy, and Chris Elam on a panel about Web Marketing for dance companies, moderated by Kathryn Padberg. I’m glad they’re structuring it as more of a Q&A, because this is a rich and multifaceted subject - and the “advice” is so dependent on individual companies’ circumstances - that I think it will be much more beneficial to have a discussion around the subject, as opposed to people just presenting work.

If any of you are planning on attending and already have questions or things you want to know more about, let me know now and I’ll come more prepared to try to show or talk about that subject.

It was recently announced that Chris Elam and Misnomer Dance Theater succeeded in their quest for Ideablob’s $10K monthly giveaway! You can see more details on their idea here, but basically it sounds like they are looking to use the money to develop a web site with lots of new tools for dance companies to use in presenting and increasing access and awareness on the web.

From the IdeaBlob Press Release:

“Our goal is to create innovative ways to expand our fan base and at the same time bring dance to theater fans and supporters when they are not able to make it to the theater,” explained Elam. “Ideablob has proven to be a perfect, non-traditional way to get support for our non-traditional idea of promoting artists and their work.”

Congrats guys!

And on that note, I thought I’d let you know what I’ll be up to this weekend.

I am co-facilitating a workshop on online video for dance companies at Dance/USA’s Winter Forum. The Winter Forum’s focus this year is on marketing and the use of technology.

What makes this information relevant to this post is that my co-facilitators are Chris Elam and Jaki Levy from Misnomer Dance Theater. The conference officially starts tomorrow, although most people arrived in LA today (myself included) and there will be an introductory sort of get together tonight. Should be an interesting new experience.

Injury Update

sloan_thumb USA_flag Posted by Sloan

The latest news, from the infinite Ball Room at West Side Dance Physical Therapy…

Since starting over with a new PT in January, things were looking good. Even though our new approach was almost like taking a step back, doing concentrated exercises retraining smaller but very important muscles around my hip joint which had shut down, (instead of bigger exercises or dance class which had hurt too much) I was starting to feel better, and more confident that I could start taking ballet classes again soon.

But the way these things generally go, is that you can’t take steps forward without eventually taking a step back. The past week and a half has been a bit more frustrating than usual, with the distinct pain inside my joint presenting itself once again. But again, this is par for the course, and I just need to keep concentrating on my exercises and alignment and not get down about it, so that I can continue past this bump in the road.

The hardest part is missing dancing so much, but not being able to do anything about it. Two PT appointments, and one acupuncture appointment a week, plus a daily muscle retraining routine has been all I can do, lest I cross that line between building strength and aggravating the injury.

Fortunately, I’ve been able to stay connected with the company in a few outside ways, one of which is speaking again for a patrons group before the show tonight (this time it’s about what it’s like to make the transition from student to company member). I’ll let you know how it goes.

Speaking in a Studio?

sloan_thumb USA_flag Posted by Sloan

This past Tuesday I spoke on a panel for New York City Ballet’s Society in C group on dancers’ outside interests. Society in C is NYCB’s young patrons group, and on the panel with me was Kyle Froman, who started photographing dancers backstage and is now publishing a book called “In The Wings”, and Aaron Severini (above), who composes music mainly for choreographers but occasionally does commercial work as well. Moderating the evening was Ian Archer-Watters, who was a ballet dancer with Fort Worth Ballet and St. Louis Ballet, then worked with NYCB in their development department, and is now a star in Les Ballets Grandiva, an all-male dance company that tours extensively and even does their own versions of Balanchine ballets, like Semi Precious Stones (Jewels) and Serenadiana (Serenade).

It was my first time doing something like this… I feel like I may have talked too much, but it was a lot of fun and I got to meet some interesting people. Some of the attendees noted that it seemed like the three of us had never met before. I think dancers don’t generally talk too much about what they do outside of the theater, so although I work with Kyle and Aaron all the time, I really didn’t know the details about their outside activities… but now I guess I do. Thanks Julia for this fun opportunity!
