With the oil prices being outrageous I elected to not go far and have my first ever Summer “Staycation”. Over the past couple weeks people around me have been talking about Summer like it is already over. I have accepted that fact. The end is near and I would like to bow out gracefully.

Here are some pics of my Summer “Staycation”. I did not go too far but I had a fun and productive Summer anyways. All of the pics that I have decided to posts are all varied activities involving work, play or personal interests. Enjoy.

Many of my students go off to summer programs. This year I had kids at Chautauqua, the Rock School, ABT and Virginia School of the Arts.
I wanted to share some of their experiences with you all.
Alston, 10, went to Chautuaqua and the Rock School.
Here she is at Chautauqua with Patricia Mcbride:

Here’s some from her own post on TIM
“Amy Price was another one of our teachers. She choreographed our classical piece and our contemporary piece for the show at the end of the intensive. She was fun to have class with, but she still expected alot out of us.
This is a picture of Ms. Amy correcting me in pointe class.”

And here is Linzy and friend, also at Chautauqua. They both felt that is was a very special place to be.

Alston with Bo and Stephanie Spassoff at the Rock’s coaching intensive

Angela spent her second summer at Virginia School of the Arts.

I’m really proud of them they are all such special dancers and people. I have a few more to share with you in my next post.

Force Fields

Last month I wrote a guest post on Matt Gough’s blog quodlibet titled math skills. It addressed the question of what fundamentals of physics and mathematics should be included in the dance technology curriculum.

Since dance-tech is in its infancy and still forming as a field this is an open question. This issue is not simply about inserting math and science into an arts curriculum but more so about how these two worlds partner. The action is reciprocal, math and science inform the dance and dance-tech provides new ways of knowing math and physics.

Force is one of the central landmarks of physics pedagogy. Gravity is Newton’s force.

And to use the force you must learn the force.

Simulation is a great way to learn about forces.

So is dancing.

Hello everyone,

All week I have been working on some new material for a new independent project for TAG. It has been great getting back into the studio working, trying out new ideas and working with new artists.

One thing that I am trying to do while in the creative process is move beyond myself.
Know my weakness and work on them. In the midsts of doing that, I hardly recognize myself anymore when watching the material. I take that as a good thing. A huge tribute to that is because of the dancers. I always keep an open ear if something is not working out and I like to see the intelligence of the dancers work it out for themselves, me being able to see and direct the movement so that is has flow and clean transitions. Very much a collaborative process. Seeing the dancers learning and fulfilling the movement with they’re personalities shinning through is what I’m all about. The question is… What are you all about?

I am always thinking of different ideas and pieces. I have learned that every idea is a good idea, but there is a time and place for them so I do a lot of self-editing. The viewers are always on my mind. I always get annoyed when going to a performance or movie and clearly the creativity is there but it lacks human connection (that’s just me though). Thinking back to my schooling and doing comp improv classes where you had to get up in front of your peers and teachers, perform followed by critiques. It was always a trip and very daunting. In the end it was good to get others constructive criticism because you can take the critiques and apply them if you want to or not. The main thing is that you get to hear how others respond to your work and that is something that I miss. Nowaday’s right before showtime I am always scared of “what will people think”? Are my ideas being expressed clearly?

With that in mind, March 26th I will be posting a “works in progress” as an informal showing or “conversation piece” with the material i am currently working on. I figure there is no better way to get people’s opinions on the work than to give the work to them directly. The only catch is that the viewing will be up for only one day (I could not take anymore than that).

I invite you all to watch and leave comments about whether this would be something you’d take an interest in watching?

Hope 2 c U there

B
