This film is titled BR 003. It is the last of a trilogy with me dancing outside my home in San Francisco. It was presented earlier this year at a “couture” fashion show in Washington DC. We had some of work projected on 20 foot panels as the models “turned to the left.” Truth be told , i was not able to make it but i heard that it went well.
Above is a shot of Matthew Taylor(dr. Bacon) and i directly before the filming. We were waiting for the dancers to arrive for a planned shoot and he looks over at me and ask “do you want to improv outside while i film?” Because we had some time to kill my reaction was “Sure. Lets roll”. We went outside and did work. Bacon gets the “itch” like i do. He loves trying out new ideas purely out of curiosity. I am the same way but i thought it was me being ADHD.
congrats to my man Joe Phillips on his award in France. Do work!

This is something that has been lying around for a while.
Just a sketch.
Not too sure what to do with it.
This is how i work.
I like to get out an initial phrase that is very basic in structure. This way i will be able to retain the info while thinking about how to let the movement evolve organically. Watching the dancers interpretation of the phrase i am able to see other moments that i can later detail. That is why i call this phase a “Sketch”. The movement right now is in its embryotic phase. Who knows what it will grow up to be?(Don’t get me wrong. I have a pretty good idea)
dancer: Dana Genshaft.
HAPPY BELATED BDAY DANA!!!
ps. The game of “SKATE” got postponed until this Sunday. Lucky me…….?

Well, I dance and I make dances. Yes. It is dance related.
I will give a little insight about myself for all of you who do not know me. I love shoes! Between my house in Charlotte and my apartment in San Francisco, i have well over a hundred pairs. The things that i do for shoes or a good shoe sale always makes me laugh. A couple days ago while costume shopping i found a really cool pair of sneakers. Not until 4 days later and a whole bunch of my friends making fun of my feet did i realize that the shoes were 2 sizes too small.
With that said, this next blurb might be the most ridiculous situation that i have ever put myself in for a pair of shoes.
Last week we knocked out our performances. I do not have anything on the plate until the beginning of next year, so im chillin’. My only “artistic” concerns are just putting material together , cementing and exploring some of the ideas of i have buzzing around. Because i am on hiatus i decided to take up skateboarding again……That’s where it all went wrong.
San Francisco has a super strong sneaker culture and there is a shop that all the “sneakerheads” go to. It is called “HUF”. The owner of the company is named Keith Hufnagel. Huf is a pro skater who has a whole culture/empire in San Francisco and around the world. He has a shop in our neck of the woods and is a friend of ours.
A few weeks ago, “HUF” had a warehouse shoe sale for 60% off. Something that would have been cool to go to, had i not been out of town. My roommate, Jeezy, was supposed to hook me up with a pair and totally forgot about it. As soon as i got back into town from vacation i had to go directly to rehearsal with Dores. After we had finished up, her and i were walking back to our homes and ran into Keith and his girlfriend MariEllen. I was talking to Keith about how bummed i was that i missed the sale. He was telling me that Jeezy had come in on Saturday and bought three pairs of shoes and jackets. That killed me because he was supposed to get me a pair , so i was asking if they had anything left over. Keith told me that he would see what they had left over and i got excited. This is where it really goes downhill.
MariEllen was saying that he should try and bet me for a pair of shoes. He and i decided that we would play a game of “SKATE”. “SKATE” is a game where you have to match whatever trick your opponent performs. If he lands a trick and i miss it, i get an “S”. The first person to spell “SKATE” looses. We made a bet that if i win, i’ll get a free pair of shoes. If he wins, he gets a hundred bucks from me.
I have skated for 11 years and stopped for 7. I do not really skate now , but i have been getting all of my old tricks back (building up the Stats). I know that i have a chance of getting him with some technical tricks, especially if i go “switch,” which is skating with the opposite leg. The only thing that really worries me is that he is a professional skater on some of the best teams, with his own shoe and stores. Not to mention, i liked his skating style when i was younger……Aside from all that, I’m Fine.
Wish me luck. The game’s on sunday.

P.S. www.Hufsf.com is where you can browse the merchandise. Good stuff. Tell him i sent you.

A pic of dancer Garen Scribner, shot by Ben Wardell.
Damn it is only Tuesday!
Last week-end I went up the coast for some much needed R&R. It is the last week-end of the year that I will be able to get away so i made it a point to do some cold ice chilling.
Now that i am back we have a lot of work to do in the next couple of weeks. We have a couple performances coming up the 16th and 17th of this month in collaboration with a new organization called Urban Art Farm. This will be our first San Francisco debut as The Artist Group.
Putting together a well constructed evening entails of so much nit picky work that makes putting the show together the easy part. It is all of the details that make it a strenuous experience. Budget, space, dancers, costumes, flights, advertising and everything else under the sun all have to be factored in. All of this coming from a balance of zero. This is where i use the age long practice of “The Secret” (thanks Oprah)
With that said… Dana, our coordinator for TAG has made this event possible. Within a few days time, she has raised enough money for us to fly out two of the dancers from NYC who arrive on Thursday. She is making it possible for me to come in and do the “work”. Really, I could not have asked for a better person for the job. She is well organized, efficient and such a huge talent.
The event itself is going to be cool. TAG is going to present 2 new pieces as well as a world premiere film featuring Muriel Maffre, edited by Ben Peirce. Dana and I had the opportunity to watch the film last week. It is simply beautiful. It reminds me of the film “Spirited Away” in a varied context.
I will be posting pics of the rehearsals with the dancers later on this week. Im thinking about posting the Sea Ranch trip too, but we got a little excited with trying to be like Americas Next Top Model. Tyra, you are ruining our lives.. But in a sexy way:)
Below is our new logo.
Thoughts please?
