As the City Center season winded down and ABT went on a week tour to Berkeley, CA, bringing some of the rep. that we did in NYC, the dancers then embarked on a four week lay off. My travels brought me all over the country, and then to Europe for a week of preparations for an upcoming debut.
The week in Berkeley was filled not only with performing repetoire that I enjoy very much, Ballo Della Regina and Benjamin Millepied’s From Here on Out, but also all the advantages that Northern California can bring. I had a wonderful meal at Chez Panisse, hailed as one of the best restaurants in the country, and soaked up some great art, the photography especially interesting, at San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA).

With the tour finished and with the reason that I don’t get home to Phoenix as often as I would like, I spent a quick 48 hours being pampered by the ‘rents’ as only ‘rents’ could do. But most importantly, seeing my BEAUTIFUL GOLDENS, as I have shared with you in past enteries.

On to Minneapolis, where I spent another 48 hours gawking at the architecturally stunning Walker Art Center, newly redone by Herzog and De Meuron, the same architects that completed the refurbishment of the De Young Museum in San Fran, as Sloan pointed out on a recent visit. I had a much anticipated meeting with a very well respected artist that might possibly turn into a future project. We shall see…

The Opera House in Amsterdam
I only stopped over in New York, to do a little laundry and re pack my bags, to go onto Amsterdam for a week. Guillaume Graffin, a former Paris Opera trained and 17 year principal/ballet master with ABT, moved to Amsterdam 2 years ago and joined the Dutch National Ballet as ballet master. When he was working over at ABT, we formed a certain bond in the studio… he having coached me in my first full length ballet with the company, Swan Lake. I have always wanted to go over there and work with him, continuing my desire to learn from him as an artist, and I finally had the free time to do so. I am going to debut Giselle in the spring, with none other than Stella Abrera, GORGEOUS dancer with the company, dancing the lead. One of Guillaume’s great roles was Albrecht in Giselle, and I found the opportunity of him passing on his expertise to a fresh Albrecht something that I couldn’t pass up.

Guillaume in Giselle
The week was an intense one, mainly just talking about the character of Albrecht, and dissecting what to portray through out the story. Guillaume is such an intuitive artist, that I can only try and absorb what he tells me ‘he did’ or chose ‘not to do’ when he was dancing the role. It will take much more preparation for the actual debut but it was really nice to break the ice with someone I respect so much.
And that leads me here… back home, working on more preparations for the Met Season, and at my computer, finally with internet service and The WInger.

During a side trip through San Luis, on a three day break from performances, the dancers were treated to a very typical asado, which is a traditional grilled meat. Very Argentinian and VERY good. I haven’ t eaten this much meat in a whole year in the States then I have in two weeks with everyone here.

Amidst the meat!

I couldn’t resist sharing this with you all. On my recent vacation, my brother Brian showed me his moves on the sail boat and again at a barbeque.
What do you all think? Destined for ABT like his brother?

Hello all.
I am writing you from a very tropical airport cafe in Belize City, Belize as I make my departure back to reality… no wait, New York. I have been ‘unwinding’ and ‘decompressing’ after a very busy three months of performances. This is my first time to Belize and what a visit it was. The sole reason being my father’s 60 birthday celebration, it also served as my annual ‘baking in the sun’ ‘relax my body after Met season’ vacation. I spent the whole time with my family, Mom, Dad, brother Brian, and me.
The vacation started on a 49 foot Catamarian, which is a sail boat complete with captain and first mate attending to our every whim. We sailed all around the waters of Belize, for five days, snorkeling, sunning, eating and drinking. It was bliss. The dolphins, stars, fish, barrier reef, and islands were stunning as we made our way through its Cayes.
If that wasn’t enough for us, we then spent the rest of the time in an amazing resort on the island of San Pedro, called the Victoria House. Sea side, we spent more time in the sun napping, with no televisions, no radios, no internet-e mail. Its amazing what you get caught up in while ‘in the mode’, especially in NYC. I find a love/hate relationship with New York more and more. Its the beating heart of my profession, which I wouldn’t change, but the need to get away for pure sanity is ever present.
Nevertheless, 10 days came and went, and here I am sipping my last beer as I board my flight. I do feel rejuvinated though, ready to take on my new tasks at hand. One of them being my up coming trip to Argentina to dance with Paloma Herrera and the Teatro Colon. I will dance Paquita and Raymonda, heavy work if I might say so, but a trip down there with that company will be fascinating. More to come on that.
So here are a few pics of my trip, me in vacation mode. My once a year unwinding….

A dive into the aqua colors of Belize

The tame kind of shark… if there is one.

Introducing my brother Brian, enjoying the wind

A total sucker for sunsets

Monday through Wednesday of last week, I was at the Silo artist residency in Pennsylvania (formerly Gelsey Kirkland’s family farm) with ad hoc Ballet, preparing for our upcoming show, The Lucy Poems.

Photo: Deborah Lohse in the studio at SILO artist residency.
It was a gorgeous setting to be doing some serious rehearsing in and the weather couldn’t have been better. We were able to get a bit of tanning by the pool in on our lunch break Tuesday. The grounds cover many acres and there are horses and dogs and bugs! so it was quite a change and respite from the city.
While running my solo shortly after arriving, a wasp landed on my head while I was in a deep lunge and as I straightened up into tendu, it decided to sting me in the face! Rehearsal was called off for the day shortly thereafter and we all had a good laugh (while I was icing my face:-() at what happens when four trinas find themselves rehearsing in a country barn. Lots of side glances in horror and sweeping movements in order to look at or avoid many large bugs.
Nothing like getting in touch with nature in order to get you really moving….. feel ready for the stage or pretty much anything coming my way while dancing now!
