MATTHEW MURPHY was born in New York City, grew up in Missoula, Montana and is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts. While there, he studied under Warren Conover and Melissa Hayden and danced leading roles in The Sleeping Beauty, Les Sylphides, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, as well as George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Scotch Symphony and Stars and Stripes.

Murphy joined ABT’s Studio Company in September 2003 and the main Company in April 2004. His repertoire with the Company includes the Old Soldier in The Green Table and a Carnival Dancer in Othello. He created a leading role in Trey McIntyre’s Pretty Good Year. He also dances in all of the company’s full length ballets.

In addition to dancing, Matthew enjoys films, theater, reading and writing as much as he can in his spare time. Last fall he took his first steps into the world of choreography with a duet titled “Two Thirds Quartet” which was performed at P.S. 122 in the East Village. In addition to blogging on “The Winger” he also has his own blog “Ranting Details” which chronicles his adventures in the city and beyond.

[…] Posted by Matthew Murphy After several weeks resting in the mountains of Montana with my family, I’m now back in the city and trying to get my life back together. One of my favorite things about coming from Montana is what a juxtaposition to the city it is. In one place I have towering skyscrapers while just a plane ride away there are towering mountains. However, these two vastly different locations makes transitioning from one to the other rather jarring. My sister and I were quick to note upon return this week how much of a sensory overload NYC is after the calm and serene summer air of Montana. […]

[…]   Posted by Matthew Murphy Today was the day I have been dreading for quite some time; the moment where I had to go into the offices at ABT and discuss the state of my never-ending illness. I slept poorly last night and then awoke this morning with my mind racing through what I needed to say and how to present myself during my meeting.  So much of my frustration over the past five months has been my own disappointment with my body for not coming through and getting well, which in turn keeps me from dancing.  I tell myself over and over again that I have done everything in my power to ensure my well being, but somehow I still end up placing blame on myself.  When this sickness started, during the first week of Met season rehearsal, I never would have imagined it lasting this long but here I am five months later, nursing the same problems and constantly battling my brain to come to a calm emotional state. […] Posted by Matthew Murphy Tonight when I came to check out the site, I saw Susan’s post about viewing David Michalek’s “Slow Dancing” film installation in Los Angeles. While it’s certainly a different setup than what we had in New York, I still want to urge everyone to go check it out. It’s an incredibly unique experience and I was lucky enough to conduct an interview with Michalek himself for my site back in July. Thought this was the perfect opportunity to share it with some new readers.  It’s up at the Music Center of Los Angeles until the 26th of September.  Enjoy! […]

[…]   Posted by Matthew Murphy It’s been a few days since I posted, and today’s post isn’t exactly the most exciting so forgive me. Even though this is just about a great new playlist (that’s perfect for warm-ups), the next posts I have coming up are going to be VERY exciting! I am just waiting on a few things before I can post them. So if you’re in the mood for some great new music, check out the new “RANTING WINGER” iMix. Over the past five months of being sick, music has played a key role in brightening up my spirits. This playlist reflects the songs that help put a smile on my face at the moment. There’s a huge mix of artists, including M.I.A, Mika, Nellie Mckay, Patrick Watson, Rilo Kiley and many more! Check it out! […]

[…]   Posted by Matthew Murphy Oh, Fall For Dance, how I’ve awaited your arrival! It’s that time of year again, the time where you can test out your tastes in dance and not cry if you leave slightly disappointed; after all, you’ve only spent $10 on a ticket. In the dance and theater world’s current state, with prices sometimes soaring into the triple digits, it’s hard to not feel like you absolutely MUST enjoy what you spend your money on. If you’re trying to save a dime (and who isn’t in this city?) venturing into the unknown can be nearly impossible. Then, along came City Center’s brilliant festival “Fall For Dance” which started last night in New York City. […]

[…]   Posted by Matthew Murphy Today I headed up to 890 Broadway to peek into rehearsals for the upcoming City Center season. It’s frustrating not being a part of yet another season, but I feel like I’ve come to terms with the situation. One of the hardest things about showing up is running into countless people and having to endlessly explain how I am doing, etc. I’ve thought about making a shirt that just lists all the improvements and current problems, as it would make my life a lot easier. Once I get past the “sick” business, I’m always so happy to see my friends. After being in rehearsals with them constantly year round, it’s been tough not seeing the smiling (or sometimes brooding) faces of my fellow dancers. We took a little photo to share with everyone! […]   Posted by Matthew Murphy What kind of blogger am I when I show up with a worthless camera?  That was the thought running through my head at intermission of my final Fall for Dance performance tonight.  I promised a big surprise guest, and I can only halfway deliver.  The surprise is that it was none other than our very own Justin Peck, City Ballet Corps Member and newfound friend.  Normally I would have a fantastic photo to accompany this post, but my camera was drained of all battery. So instead you get us as the Golden Girls.  I don’t know why, that’s just what ya get. […]

[…]   Posted by Matthew Murphy Over the past few days I’ve taken hundreds of photographs of my friends in the company.  There are endless bodies to drool over within ABT which in turn makes taking pictures not only fun, but beautiful, as I am continuously amazed by the dancers’ physiques.  Today my job seemed especially easy as I followed Blaine Hoven around to several different rehearsals.  Everyone is working their butts off (quite literally) and I wanted to share a few pictures of Blaine with everyone.  Blaine and I went to school together, growing up much like brothers and I can proudly say that he is going to be astounding this season!  He’ll be dancing in many ballets, including Clear and the world premiere of Jorma Elo’s Close to Chuck,  both of which I photographed today.   Be sure to pick up your tickets for City Center today! Hey, Matthew. I heard thru a friend that you are suffering with Epstein-barre. I experienced this special illness several years ago for about three years or so. I learned quite a bit from it and think (know) I can really help you. I met you in Zvi’s class, last year I believe. I’m tall, thin, blonde with nice feet (sounds like a personal add). Contact me when you get this. If I don’t hear from you I think that Arch might have your number. I’ll be in Zvi’s class tomorrow, Halloween. Feel free to call 845-323-7451. I know how frustrating this can be. Peace and patience, Daniel

Matthew,
I just read your latest post this morning (Thurs. 4/17). You will ALWAYS be a dancer — that is never, ever going to change. It doesn’t matter how many lockers you clean out or how strong a virus thinks it may be: the dancer part of you is and will be a constant. Allow us now, please, to remind you of that.
