[…] I’ve only seen this company a couple of times, but what is so cool is that on the flyer is a picture of Miki Orihara, a newish contributor to my favorite dance blog, The Winger. I’m so excited to see her perform! I personally think blogs are a great way for dancers to communicate with audiences and make new fans. From her Winger posts, Miki seems so incredibly sweet. So, I can’t wait! […]

[…] My friend Dea and I went to see Martha Graham dance company last night. This was only my second time seeing them live and the first was many years ago and I now can remember nothing but the magnificent costumes. I want to do more research before I write my review. In general, I felt like the dancing was superb, the dancers were excellent actors as well as movers, and they gave everything they had. Miki Orihara (pictured above) in particular was stunning as the woman scorned, the Medea character, in the first of the three pieces I saw, “Cave of the Heart.” […]

[…] It’s slim (as is to be expected with any new publication), but has some good articles. There are, amongst other things, an interview with choreographer Lar Lubovitch (one of my favorites) by dancer Rasta Thomas (also one of my favorites!), an article on up-and-coming choreographer Aszure Barton, an interview with Grey’s Anatomy song writer Ingrid Michaelson, a photo essay on Cuba that’s part fashion part photo-journalism, and a write-up of The Winger featuring interiews with five of its contributors: founder Kristin Sloan, ballet and modern dance stars David Hallberg and Miki Orihara respectively, and, happily, South African grad student and dance artist Maia Jordaan, and dance and technology expert and B-boy Tony Schultz. Being theory-based, the Winger posts of the latter two are a bit more esoteric than the others’, and thus harder to understand (though definitely worth trying!), and I’m really happy the magazine decided to include interviews with them instead of only the most “popular” contributors. In particular, I just love Maia — she’s so smartly charming: “My work is inspired by the sense of a body in motion emoting a connection with the audience. Even stillness contains movement … In a society where the head is often cut off from the body, it is essential to bring head, heart and body together … My work is open-ended, asking the audience to fill the empty spaces with their own appreciation and understanding…” There’s also a little description of one of her own dance pieces, entitled “Still Waters” a site-specific work in which Jordaan, wearing pink underwear, half submerges herself in the dangerously murky waters of the Kaolin Quarry not knowing what may be found underneath. I don’t remember ever seeing this posted on the actual website and I wish she’d post more often her own work and South African performances she attends. She and Tony have thus far concentrated on leading the book discussion group, which so far has focused on the very theory-oriented work of dance philosopher Andre Lepecki, which is, I think very difficult for non-grad students of dance to comprehend. Miki,
I absolutely love your work. I’ll be attending the Graham Intensive this summer so I can’t wait to work with you and all the other insanely gifted artists there! A fun story….I’ve choreographed a piece for two men working in the Graham style, it was so well received in the community that they wished us to perform it for the closing ceremonies of our sister city’s delegate trip here to southern Indiana. Our sister city is Tochigi Japan, and they were happy to invite us to learn a traditional Japanese dance that was just remarkably beautiful and calming to do….all in all the evening was wonderful, but what reminded me of wanting to tell the stroy was that an older woman on the delegation had come up to me afterwards and said “It was Graham?” I replied that I tried to make it in that style, she said “Yuriko was Graham.”…we barely could communicate because of an extreme language barrier but we both understood….Yuriko was Graham.
Can’t wait for the summer!!!!

Saturday Matinee » Project Bandaloop: Redefining Dance said,
[…] Last week, I got an opportunity to fly down to southern California for my dad’s 58th birthday, and while I was there, I finally got to experience Fall For Dance, which took place in Orange County. After hearing about raves of how cool the New York Fall For Dance was, I had somewhat high expectations about the show I was going to see. Overall - it was a tad disappointing. Apparently, pointe shoes in ballet companies is so yesterday, while dancing in complete silence is (I think almost every contemporary piece started out with dancers starting in complete silence.) After a while, I actually wanted to see a sequined tutu. But in the midst of contemporary experimentation, there were some gems, and it really was a great way for audiences to see many dance companies in one sitting, like a dessert sampler at a restaurant. I got to see the Martha Graham Dance Company for the first time as well. A personal highlight was meeting Miki Orihara, who is a phenomenal dancer. […]
